The Truth or One Nite Alone?

They are considered the two acoustic (more or less) albums by Prince. One based on an acoustic guitar, the other one on a piano. Tryin' to show us how good is Prince without the help of electricity and machines and hornz.
But what are better?
I love to listen to Prince playing piano, and I love some of the tunes (Ona, Have a heart, Arboretum), and what about his virtuosity?

Ok, but if I have to choose one, I pick "The truth". The melodies are better, the songs are much better.Maybe Prince plays piano better than acoustic guitar, but The truth is more inspired.

Or do you prefer ONA?

It's The Truth 4 me. I just think the songs R better. I like ONA but the lyrics on the Truth are more personal especially the title track, Don't Play Me and don't get me started on One Of You're Tears!! The lyrics on that track!! 'His end in the small of your back'
Goosebumps!! Big time!!

"The Truth" is great because it has some funk tunes that I truly dig, especially "Man In A Uniform" and "Third Eye".

I personally prefer, "One Nite Alone"...Hearing Prince play piano is like listening to angels sing sometimes...really beautiful.

The worst songs on ONA are still quite good.

The worst songs on The Truth are regurgitorious.

Better still, why not create a single CD out of your favourite tracks from each album?

It worked a treat for me.

Not that I think 'The Truth' is a bad album by any stretch of the imagination. It's a mighty fine effort by anybody's standards.

But on 'One Nite Alone...' Prince is not trying to prove anything. He's just being brilliant in an understated kind of way.

Which is no mean feat.

Some of my favorite songs are on The Truth: Don't Play Me, Comeback, Cool as The Other Side of the Pillow, and of course Dionne worship . I like most of the other songs as well.

ONA, on the other hand, is a cool little album but it doesn't compare.

A cool little album that still houses towering, emotionally charged songs like 'Avalanche', to name just one.

Some of Prince's most mature work of recent years is showcased on a cool little album that is totally devoid of pyrotechnics and which probably didn't even raise a sweat during its recording.

Maybe it's too much like an EP in its economy and demo-like unshowiness, but seriously, ONA probably stands as Prince's most honest and personal work ever.

the truth -- easily.

it's an album full of songs. with about 3 exceptions, ONA sounds to me like a bunch of ideas for songs which were never completed. interesting ideas, but not complete. i appreciate it because it's a peek into his process of starting something at the piano that could probably have a more complete realization in a different setting.

a Prince album where the finest moment is a cover version just can't stand too high, in my book.

ONA is a pretty little cd showcasing Prince & his piano.
The Truth is Prince trying to be raw & stripped down & in your face.
The Truth has power & strength & intensity that ONA never approaches.
Love both cds but The Truth wins by a mile.

Not saying you're wrong or disagreeing with you per se, but the strength of ONA is that he doesn't even have to have that power "in your face" attitude. It's a whole different ballgame with this CD, and the beauty within is astonishing.

And yes, the songs are complete! I never understand this arguement... perhaps some just can't get into the fact that it's just piano and voice, and that's pretty much it.

Let's just say I'm a big fan of ONA and leave it at that!

Comparing an album of fleshed out acoustic arrangements to an album of a man behind a piano doesn't pass the apples/apples test. I like them both for different reasons, simply because they're different from each other. Each brings something to the table that the other doesn't. It depends on which strikes my mood at a given time. And I have no problem in saying that to me The Truth is the best album he released in the '90s.

That's my pov and I'm stickin to it.

i liked One night alone but i definatly prefer the truth, i've only listened to ONA a few times and i havent really given it a chance to grow on me, perhaps if i listened to it properly i might like it more. but for the moment the truth has some of my favourite prince tracks on of all time whereas ONA doesn't
