less than a year... i must ask: what is it that got you into him? i was 15/16 when i got into him. and the things that were out at the time were Diamonds & Pearls and . i've always felt that this was the last great push in recruiting Prince fans. and even that material wasn't up to his previous high standard, and i thought that if people could become a Prince fan during the era of Tony M., Mayte, and some fairly rote love songs, then they could weather any storm that might have come since (and there have been many). again, what was it you heard that hooked you?

I was (and still am a big MJ fan) and had a £20 Amazon voucher. I spent it on Dangerous (The only MJ CD I didn't have) and I thought I'd give Prince a try having known of the comparisons between them. I chose The Very Best Of to use the rest of the voucher. The songs I liked best were When Doves Cry, Little Red Corvette and I Wanna Be Your Lover. A couple of weeks later came Purple Rain then 1999 and so after every Prince album I could find. I think "The Beautiful Ones" was the first time I really thought "Wow". I know there isn't much to encourge people who aren't fans to listen to him these days. I'm 21 now, does that count? I bought The Hits 1 in 1998, but it wasn't until early 2000 that I really started to become a truly obsessed fan! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

When I started to read your post I thought that it was not posssible as you were not even born back then, but when I came to the "Rave" part I realized that you were talking about the year 1999 and not the album With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! I'm 27 but have finally got my 20 year girlfriend heavily into Prince.
The clincher for her was the Truth, but after seeing him at the Appollo there's no looking back. "And to all the non-believers, better fear me" --------------------------------------------------

im 19, been into prince since xmas last year, when i bought the very best of for me sister and copied it for myself, now ive got like 16 of his albums, but money probs stops me from getting em all. plus i just know as soon as ive got em all they will be reissued and remastered and ill havge to buy em again!
i have one mate who likes prince, but doesnt really actively seek out his albums and stuff. i have another whose dad loved him until about the gold experience, when he stopped buying his stuff, so the mate himself respects and doesnt mind him, but hasnt got into him too much (i think he's going to cos he's heavily into hip hop and alot of the stuff he likes is influenced by prince etc, well i say alot, probs just the roots!) other than that noone really, at uni actually a couple of people like him in a greatest hits sense, about 3 actually, and all cos of me! hahah!

A decidedly humble, and entirely coincidental to my chosen monkier, 23 years of age. Been into him since Come tho...our whole village are fans of the wee man - 2000 strong Prince posse.
It's very strange...a little like a Stephen King plot I s'pose.

Well, I did like Batdance when it came out, but I thought it was actually by Batman so it doesn't really count. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

I remember thinking Loveshack by the B52s was the Batman song everyone was taling about. I was in a car with my grandparents on the way to Blackpool when it was transmitted through the airwaves.
That part "Bang bang, on the door want in" I thought they were singing "Bat man, at the door Robin".

That part does sound kinda like the old Batman theme song, now that I think about it. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

Wow, you people sure missed out on alot of great stuff in the last 20 years. ( not you fault). But I'm 37, and there has been amazing stuff to hear and see in the last 20 years of Prince. I also wondered what would bring a new fan into the world of P. The last few years have been rather dull and slow compared to the '80s and early '90s.
So much hype, video, and excitement with all the old stuff. Now you can only find that stuff on bootlegs. Boots are the main reason I became more of an obsessed fan than casual and stay in the loop with his silly ways. If you new fans can find some of the old material on boots or older videos, you will really see what Prince was about. Good luck! . "

Sorry if I sound a tad patronising my friend, but I can freely swim around my own house due to the astonishing number of boots which permate and saturate my abode.
I don't believe there is one 'available' Prince song that I have not heard. And yeah, the unreleased tunes and performances are also what pushed me over the edge of fandom into the unexplored tundra of obsessiveness. [This message was edited Thu Sep 11 4:52:56 PDT 2003 by Number23]
