N.E.W.S. - Porno Music

I'm sorry - I really have tried to get into Prince's jazz-noodlings but it's really not happening.

I saw N.E.W.S. on sale in my local HMV and nearly bought it. Well, I thought I'd download a track before I parted with the best part of £15.00...

I downloaded "West" and it sounds like a porno soundtrack. Not even good porno - the bad kind from the 70s full of German women with blue eyeshadow and nicotine-stained fingers. I can't listen to it without seeing heaving pale teutonic flesh in my mind. Are North, East and South the same?

I'm with Jam on this one. Binary is way off base with the porn analogy. NEWS is off the hook!

Jam - its not that I absolutely love NPS, I just don't hate it. Its better than Diamonds & Pearls, for sure...

So do the other three tracks have the same vibe as "West"?

That's just as well...

Well, I dig N.E.W.S. but I've got South on at the moment and it does sound kinda rude. It's not the soundtrack to some dodgy, tatty old porn, it's the soundtrack to your own wonderful & uplifting sexual experiences. That's assuming you have them. I hope you do. I hope you all do.

Maybe not porn, but there is a 70s cop show feel to some of the music.

I somehow can't imagine myself shagging to the drums at the beginning of East.
You would undoubtedly burn your penis and sweat off your tattoos.

I enjoyed this post more than I enjoyed NEWS...lol

I don't dislike the album, it just doesn't do much for me. As his instrumental meanderings go, I like Xpectation far more.

And did I mention already that my damn CD case is falling apart?

Good point! There has been a jazz element 2 Princes work 4 years and I lot of people treat N.E.W.S as if it's some half assed meanderings from someone who doesn't understand the form.
I'm a jazz musician and I think N.E.W.S is a great work. There are as many wonderful moments on that album as there are on Bitches Brew. I've been called deaf on this forum 4 similar comments. The more I hear N.E.W.S the more I like it.
Terribly sorry jazz purists but Princes forays into jazz are as relevant as the next mans! mine! twocents

Not only that but people forget about the Eric Leeds and Madhouse projects. The sessions with none other than Miles Davis himself! The workings of Shelia E who has a latin Jazz background. HIS OWN FATHER WAS A JAZZ MUSICIAN! Under The Cherry Moon ( open up your ears do U lie ) Sign Of The Times featured a reworking of E Train during Its Gonna Be A beautiful night and a wonderful version of NOWS THE TIME BY CHARLIE PARKER. All this history and Prince who has mastered most genre's all of a sudden doesnt know a thing about Jazz? He's no Billy Eckstein right?

and how could I forget that funk is another extension of Jazz in the first place. My little brother can play the hell out of a trumpet at 16 in The All City jazz fest but Prince has a long way to go... She Spoke to me, with Rhondah S sounding damn near like Joco Pastorius who was her biggest influence but I think I will stop now.

I also find it kind of funny how people are execpting Andre 3000's dabbling in jazz. The jazz community is so exclusive that they really would not consider any of these cats real jazz musicians, which I also think is ashame.

I like Jazz. I like Funk. I like Funky Jazz. I like Jazzy Funk... What I don't like is what is commonly-termed "Jazz Funk Fusion". I think that what I've sampled of N.E.W.S. falls into that category.

If it had the Clare Fischer orchestra swirling in the background whilst a Linn drum machine chugged away, I might have liked it more.
