Lets Pretend Were Married--have yet to see that one.

You're gonna love that one... Dez doing the one finger keyboard thing... Prince prancing around all 1999-ish style working teasing the camera... Simple yet kickass vid...

Well, the SOTT clip was quite a groundbreaking video at the time it was released...

Solely on the strength and overall impact of the live performance, the 'Sign O' The Times' movie was an undisputed tour de force.

However, the more one analyses the 'Sign O' The Times' movie the more it is revealed to be less than the sum of its parts. The storyline vignettes (which is where Prince's strengths as a video maker should have come into play), were downright silly and cheesy by anybody's standards.

In fact, 'Sign O' The Times' isn't even on a par with far worthier movie concerts, such as Talking Heads' 'Stop Making Sense', directed by Jonathan Demme, to cite just an example.

Indeed, regardless of whether the 'Sign O' The Times' movie was "groundbreaking" or not, I still maintain that Prince as video artist has been mostly pants.

.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my first comment; I was talking about the computer-animated-text- and -graphics only music video for the SONG SOTT. This was quite groundbreaking since at that time it was at the cutting edge of what was technically possible and because , in a time where image became almost everything, this video put the emphasis solely on the LYRICS.

Besides from this only example he HAS BEEN only pants as a video artist.

Partyman! I would love to see the video to this!

But PARTYMAN is a hoot and a holler - fun, crazy, charming, entertaining - I wish it woulda gotten more play, because it was one of the best!

this video is a trrriiippp! i was watchin' it recently, and couldn't help thinking , WTF???!!
i mean, it sorta reminds me of eyes wide shut, with the masquerade party. everyone's dancing around, the music's playin', and gemini (prince) poisons the water, so eveyone ends up dead in the end like in some bizarre religious cult.
i was thinking of starting a thread just on the partyman video. i mean, what message is he trying to convey? how morbid to see all those dead bodies at the end. maybe mtv never showed it 'cause they didn't want the grief.
it's kinda cool though, doesn't have anything to do with batman, which is a relief.

It had a lot to do with Batman - the references were geared more toward the Joker than Batman, however.

There are several Prince videos that I've never seen...

"Let's Pretend We're Married" (1983)
"Eye Hate U" (1995)
"Dolphin" (1994)
"The Holy River" (1997)

In addition, there are a ton of videos that were shot during the "slave years"(1993-95) that I have heard about, but have never actually seen.I've never even seen the "Undertaker" mini-movie with Vanessa Marcil!

Ive never seen DOLPHIN either!!! eek
But The Holy River nod it's calm, serene, and spiritual like the song. pray

I think the thing many of us are missing about Prince video's especialy the early ones, is that his video's differed from other video's of the era. When video's were first being aired many of them lack creativity. For example, if another band were to do Little Red Corvette they probably would have been riding around in a Little Red Corvette in the Video. Most 80's video's were very hoaky. Prince simply decided to use performance clips that showed the energy of his live performances. The Kiss clip was pretty hot and at the time showcased Prince as a dancer. And the When Doves Cry vid practically sold the movie.

Dinner With Dolores is a cool video. I like the bit where she's " dancin' like a white girl".

BET used to show this vid all the time. The extended version is pretty image-inspiring.Funny,I prolly have most of these vids on various tapes here, but I'm too lazy to investigate right now.I used to record all those Prince and related marathons.

Yeah this is taken from a concert he did on his birthday in Detroit, the whole show is incredible, supposedly it was going to be released but shelved for who knows what.
