This is one of my faaavorites!!! In my opinion, Prince never made great videos. There were some good performance clips, but mostly you watched to see what he was wearing, what was going on with his hair, and if he was busting any new dance moves...there wasn't a whole lot else to expect. And at worst, we'd get stuff like "Sign O The Times" or "Paisley Park", which woulda been better off unmade, except I guess for the fact that they're interesting little curiosities.

But PARTYMAN is a hoot and a holler - fun, crazy, charming, entertaining - I wish it woulda gotten more play, because it was one of the best!

The only vid I know exists that I haven't seen is the one for the Purple Medley...I'm sure it's no great shakes, but I'm curious. Plus, I've only seen a really REALLY bad quality version of the "Let's Pretend We're Married" video, and while it looks to be the same kinda thing as "1999", "Little Red Corvette" and "Automatic", I'd still like to give it a decent peek someday...

Prince never did push ANY boundaries as a video artist.

But the clip for 'Automatic' is slightly depraved (in an unintentional way) and funny as hell...

I can't think of any other than unreleased ones.

One was done for P.Control right?

I would like to see Automatic, I think maybe I saw a snippet of it once. Did Prince ever make a video for 'Letitgo'?. I remember seeing him promoting the single on TOTP...but I never saw a video.

My fave video is probably Partyman.Although I kinda liked 'I wish you Heaven' a lot as well. The Insatiable video is pretty boring IMO. A woman filming Prince with lots of Women in a darkened room.

So far I've only ever seen the VH1 performance of 'P.Control'.

Apart from that I don't think there has been a proper video clip for this song.

Forgive me for saying this but I find your definition of "boring" ("lots of Women in a darkened room") quite remarkable lol

I like the video 4 'Nothing Compares 2 U' - it was only released as a promo tool 4 the Hits set in Japan in 1993.

Its the usual mish-mash of clips etc which has been done 2 death I know, but this actually works really well.

Some rare clips, and some great footage from the actual Paisley performance itself. I like it.

There's a vid for almost every song (released and unreleased) between 1990 and ongoing...
For example there are vids for every single song on prince, "Come", "The Gold Experience" and "Emancipation" and everything inbetween...

I concede that from a male point of view...a lot of women wrything around, heaving bossoms and so on...might be interesting! From a female perspective it was rather dull.

The one that Spike did featured the black-and-white film of the poor family with interspersed cuts of various clips from news footage, vegas, etc. that illustrate some of the song's themes.

The second one, featured Prince and the NPG performing with some excerpts of Spike's video cut in on split screens etc. That version is on the Diamonds and Pearls video collection.

Yes Prince did push some boundaries in videos..he stared the camera down like nobodys bidness..and made it sometimes an "its all about me" thing...not everyone can be Godley and Cream and thank god for that though...pretentiousness..at least his had a fopp to it.

Yeah Prince actually pushed the visual boundaries BEFORE the video was made, so the pushing is actually in his presentation of himself as opposed to the actual form of the video.

Prince presented an aesthetic of black masculinity in the 80s that other artists were copping left and right. Sure the aesthetic was a conflagaration of several of his forerunners (Little Richard, Jimi, G. Clinton, J. Brown, etc.) but P was the one who used his videos to promote it, no matter how basic those videos were.

His "V" finger over the eyes, his pouting, his one finger down the eye tear drop style, his licking the guitar, etc.

Solely on the strength and overall impact of the live performance, the 'Sign O' The Times' movie was an undisputed tour de force.

However, the more one analyses the 'Sign O' The Times' movie the more it is revealed to be less than the sum of its parts. The storyline vignettes (which is where Prince's strengths as a video maker should have come into play), were downright silly and cheesy by anybody's standards.

In fact, 'Sign O' The Times' isn't even on a par with far worthier movie concerts, such as Talking Heads' 'Stop Making Sense', directed by Jonathan Demme, to cite just an example.

Indeed, regardless of whether the 'Sign O' The Times' movie was "groundbreaking" or not, I still maintain that Prince as video artist has been mostly pants.

"i hate U". saw a snippet of it on Prince's special played on VH-1, "Love 4 One Another". It had Michael B. as the judge, Mayte in the Witness stand, and Prince jamming on his guitar. however I think it would have been better if he had Carmen Elektra on the witness stand and instead of the original version of "i hate U" he could of done the "extended mix". B cuz, " U owe me about a million 8 or more".

Controversy, 1999, and Litle Red Corvette are his best videos. They are performance only videos yes, but that's what makes them great. They show him at his best..no need for messy concepts to get in th e way of just shwoing what u got. Period. Contorversy dare I say it...

Obviously you haven't seen the video for "Sexuality", he's in a church wearing a bikini lipsynching to lyrics about "The New breed" It might just be me but I found it to be just a bit blasphemous. You're right though, the later videos he made were a bit conservative, but that sexuality video, DAMN! I know Warner Bros got some dirty letters on that one.
