Anybody seen that interview he did for Fuji TV? He seemed very depressed..

Anxiety

I don't have a problem with the interview and I don't have much opinion on Oprah one way or another (except that I love the imitation of her on MADTV..."MY ASS IS AN ATM!!!"), but the whole thing was laced with sadness and heavy subtext and a lot of things that were implicit but not explicit. It's hard to watch - but then, I think Emancipation is a hard album to listen to sometimes, knowing how everything turned out when I hear those songs about his "true love" and his child-to-be that never was. I thought it was interesting, though. It certainly had some strange form of substance to it, however unintentional.

i didn't see anything wrong with the interview. OPRAH is an amazing woman, and she worked hard to get where she is today.i applaud her and will continue to watch her show for as long as she is on the air.i'm trying like mad to get tickets to see her live. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK OPRAH!

I didn't think that interview was bad either. Wait, you guys are talking about the one from November, 1996 when he just put out Emancipation, right?

If so, then that interview wasn't too bad. We got to see a lot more of our hero and what goes on in his castle. We also get to see him in action with his NPG crew. I didn't think it was bad at all. I guess I can look back on it and look at Mayte and see what a professional groupie she was. It might have looked liked there was some true love there but I guess you can never predict the way these sort of things end up.

I don't care for Oprah but I thought the interview was both interesting and very strained (now we know why).

When watching it I felt like everybody - including Oprah - was just trying to hard. The whole vibe felt weird.

So, I don't "resent" that interview. It just seems to me like there was a dishonesty there and like the viewer of it was being played, being asked to believe some of that stuff that was said and intimated. (And NO I'm not saying Prince or Mayte needed to get into what was happening at that time in their private life. That's nobody's business but theirs.)

I actualy find it very revealing and pretty much laid back, it shows the human side of Prince rather than the serious workholic we already know. Oprah seems to like him alot and she looks like she's having a good time, it was really a good watch seeing 2 of my favorite people sitting 2ghether having a conversation.

So back 2 the ?uestion, why do u guys resent the interview?

I don't, but I was a little, say, concerned about P's state of mind (the "there's someone else living inside me and we haven't determined its sex" and so on.) But that's all right, I enjoyed it 2.

See Marrk, you should not be so xenophobic and jump to conclusions. I wouldn't like to be interviewed by Mel B, but I hate to hear a fellow Yorkshireperson being labelled a cockney. However, to start slagging off our dear American cousins before you even checked where this numpty Gold319 is from is just jumping the gun and a bit prejudiced. Americans are not stupid, unlike our inbred, straw-chewing, rabbit-shooting, dog-shagging Dorset cousins.

My take on this...I taped the interview when it was on, I was pissed off with the way Oprah called him PRETTY.."ARE U ALWAYS THIS PRETTY?" She talked to him like he was a frigging child, I dunno I really didn't care for it at all, seemed so fake to me and Oprah could've done better and asked better questions. She even referred to his waist size as being DAINTY...WTF...I didn't like the PUNKISH references she was making in an off beat kinda way...anyhoo that's my take..I still love Oprah, but she kinda turned me off with this interview and I don't watch her as much now.
Peace and blessings ya'll.

one of the reasons why I like this forum so much is it reminds me of our differences in opinions here...

I've never thought of Mayte as a groupie...I thought of her as someone who got whisked up into the excitement of Prince and either was truly in love or believed she was in love with him. I see a beaten (not physically) woman on-stage who hadn't yet found the strength to stand-up to her husband and his controling ways. I see a mother who has just lost her babies and is being touted around still to fill her role, the role HE CREATED and made her fill. I see a very loyal but sad wife. None of what I see in that interview says "groupie" to me.

of course, both of our perspectives are PURE speculation, i just find it interesting how far apart all of our beliefs are concerining these things...

I like Oprah; but, not because of her show. She has come from soo far. She was raped as a young girl. She then started her successful climb to the top. I admire any female celebrity, who got to the top without having to prance around half-naked, be related to another celebrity, or by screwing
almost every successful male to earn her money. She did her stuff the old-fashioned way; by actually working her ass off! Even if you don't like her or her show; you should still give her some major props for busting her ass to be the billionairess that she is today. Unlike the Hilton sisters, she actually worked for every penny of that money, instead of just inheriting it.

Co-sign. I saw one of those "lifetime" shows on Oprah. That lady has been through so much. I was like, she deserves every dime that she has. To go through all that and to be sane is incredible.
Anyway, back to Harle's original question...lol
The only thing that bothered be about the Oprah interview is the part where she asked P and Mayte about the baby and they both covered it up. Looking at it in hindsight, you can tell that Mayte was clearly troubled. I hate to think that P told her to lie about it. She really didn't answer. She just looked at him and let him answer. But you could tell that she was bothered. Another part that was actually kind of funny is when Oprah asked if thier marriage would last forever. Mayte said yes. Prince just laughed and lowered his head.lol The handwriting must have already been on the wall.nod

Thats exactly the part of the interview that bothered me but overall I couldn't complain about it.

Um Hum-

i was in miami beach at that time working for my cousin's company and saw her at a club not long after that interview. going to clubs in south beach is a very regular activity for the locals there so i didn't think anything of it. alot of (famous and non-famous)people jut pop into a local club after having dinner, or even if they have trouble sleeping through the heat at night, so it's not uncommon to see folks just roll up into a spot at 1 or 2 in the morning just off the cuff because they're restless, alone, or have insomnia. so, i actually wasn't surprised to see her out in spite of her ordeal. she was getting the usual VIP treatment that celebrities get on "the beach" ('cause i think they still owned 1235 washington at that time and she was considered a semi-local celeb) but she was also ALONE and looked fucking MISERABLE... so miserable my girlfriends and i (trying not to stare) were thinking "GIRL, what's WRONG with you? what's the point of you even being out if you're not even going to try and FORGET your troubles ('cause miami beach IS the place of NO WORRY JUST THINK ABOUT IT TOMORROW) and BTW; WHERE THE FUCK IS YOUR HUSBAND???"

... it was really sad, and at that moment it became pretty clear that she probably dosen't deserve to be clowned on the way she is (just because of who she was married to). that girl looked really pitiful, like she had been THROUGH IT.

...and i mean THROUGH IT.

funny that, for all his millions, and thousands of adoring fans, old P-boy might just be, when it comes down to it behind colsed doors- a $2.00 man (ladies, y'all feel what i'm saying, right?)

i wouldn't wish that kind of drama on my worst enemy...

I don't know why people always hate on Mayte? I never thought of her as a groupie. She was so young. P was manipulating people his OWN age. You know he had to be manipulating her. She had to be devastated about the baby. At the time that the show aired, the baby stories were unconfirmed rumors. Now we know why she looked like that. It's sad that he made or convinced her to go on TV so soon after that. He could have just told Oprah that any baby questions were off limits.disbelief

I don't necessarily think I resented the interview. I was just underwhelmed by the album he was promoting at the time. It all seemed too ... adult contemporary (i.e., for the Oprah demographic) for my tastes.

I hate Oprah so much, Harle. Okay, hate is a very strong word but I strongly dislike her. I wish he would have given the interview to a true journalist and not some media whore. The only part that turned me off in the interview was the whole peeping out Mayte at 16 thing with the audience oohing and aahing. Please.

Whoa! you really dislike Oprah? I tell ya, you're the 1st person who say this to me. But why? Just wondering!

Me too. And I'm german.
I can't standing her 'Emancipaaatiooon' shoutings and sliming around... bawl

The Mel B Interview was the worse one for me!!!

She acted like an immature kid 2 me, particularly in the kids playground at Paisley when she was screaming and yelling!! It sounded awful and her Cockney accent made it even worse!!!

Kudos goes 2 Prince for just being polite 2 her !!!

She isn't a damn cockney, she's from Leeds a city safely 250 miles from London and any damn cockneys. We're not all from fucking London in England you know. Are all Americans from NY?

That's how dumb you all sound in the United Bubble of America.Get some education! mad

Rant over! lol

not quite, i've just checked your profile and found out sadly you're from Dorset, England! disbelief. Apologies to my American friends on the board who are obviously far more intelligent than some of my fellow Englishmen.

I agree, i was a shit interview though.
