need advise on picking a Prince live DVD

I just bought a new laptop that plays DVD's so I want my first (guess i shouldn't say first I did buy Car Wash couple weeks ago) DVD to be a prince live one. Should I get SOTT or the new one live at the Alladin?

Get the Rave DVD, it has a lot more stuff on it and is more polished production-wise. Then get the other one. If you haven't seen many P vids in your life, then forget the Rave and get the vids Hits DVD. That was the first time I got to see his early dirty mind vids - well worth being your first dvd if ya havent already seen them.

Start with the Alladin DVD...it's inexpensive, it's a good show, and it's recent. Maggot Brain is the first person I've ever encountered who actually LIKES the Rave DVD, but who knows - maybe you'll dig 'em both.

SOTT: is great as long as you can get over that it is not very "live". It is amazing anyhow.

Rave: is more hits oriented than Alladin. (She's Always in my hair, U got the Look, The Cross, Purple Rain...)

Alladin: Great band!! You might discover some good new tunes from Prince you may not be familiar with. Don't be fooled by the back cover-he only plays about 2 lines on Money Don't Matter 2nite and the Whole Lotta Love is somewhat of a let down also.

If I were to choose from the list above, I'd go in that order. I'm not sure what era you are into though.

I think the best TRUE document of Prince live would be the LOVESEXY Live bootleg or the Prince and the Revoluton Live (which is only available on VHS currently).

Get the Detroit '86 DVD - although it's not officially released yet.

If you can find the DVD boots of the Birthday gig in Detroit or the Livesexy shows, I'd start there. If you're restricted to "official" releases, then I'd definitely choose Aladdin over Rave, hands down.

Just keep the remote in your hand while watching it so you can adjust the volume as needed. wink

In terms of official, Rave is the closest thing you're gonna get to the p-concrts of back in the day. I gotta say I prefer the Alladin as well just for the whole band get-up and musicianship, and to some degree, less embarassing viewing to non-p loving friends than Rave wink

Tell me you don't dig Purple House? Esp. the shit he lays down for the intro. But hey, whatever gets my goat.
