WB & EMI I heard on CNN a little while ago that WB may be buying EMI. Does this mean that WB will own the rights to Emancipation, an album Prince released to celebrate his freedom from WB? Sorry Prince, but the irony is irresistable...bitch!

Maybe so, but the distribution right would be owned by WB. Wouldn't they?

You may be right. Since prince signed a one off deal with EMI, then they went bankrupt, they would no longer be able to distibute it according to any contract he may have signed so the rights would revert back to him. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass. Either way it made me laugh out loud at the dentist office when I thought about it!

This has been talked about for years...old news.
When/If WB buys EMI-they would have absolutley NO RIGHTS to Emancipation, because EMI had a distribution deal with Prince (NPG)-thus if the label no longer pays for the manufacturing of product (album) the deal is over. Also, EMI folded its rock division during Emancipation-& was re-launched after Sony Music bought it. Furthermore, when the old EMI folded, it ended all deals with "indie" labels (like NPG-so the label does make a difference). All the old EMI projects from that time was "cut-out", meaning EMI sold the remaining units to outside vendors, so NPG already made there money, & EMI tried to break even buy selling the units to outside vendors. So it doesn't matter who buys EMI, Prince has already made money of all the units EMI bought, what they do/did with it-is not Prince's concern now. I am in the recording arts industry, & it still blows my mind how people are so blinded by music charts & the great sham-"units sold". When an artist quote "sells a million copies" it doesn't mean a million customers/music fans bought the record. It means that is how many are bought by record stores. So, the bigger the hype by the label-the more they quote/unquote "sell". Or in otherwords the more the buyers for record stores buy from the label to sell. So if the labels tell the stores that something is going to sell, & there is alot of press & "paper buzz" (which is fabricated & paid for as well) then labels succumb to the public demand. And public demand is pretty easy to drum up with alot of promotion. It was little known fact that J Records (clive Davis' label) was fined by NARM for "lending" millions of dollars to the struggling Tower Records...he was fined because he "lended" them millions of dollars to "buy" Alicia Keys debut record-ultimately he was trying to obtain the best buzz & promotion in music: the coveted number 1 slot on the billboard chart...which is determined by how?? By units sold. So in a sense they kind of bought the number one slot. So this is all shady business. So it really is no joke when Prince states "he's number one at the bank..." as far as an independent artist-he is. Sorry to sidetrack Just thought I'd hip you guys. Nero

Nero Sorry to throw water on all of this but pretty much everything you said is WRONG. First of all EMI never folded. There's a HUGE difference between EMI the music company that OWNS Capitol Records, Virgin Records, etc... and EMI the record label. EMI the RECORD LABEL is no longer operating in the United States. EMI the MUSIC COMPANY is alive and well and in fact is the one in negotiations to BUY WARNER. WB is being carved up due to the entertainment division dragging the rest of the company (in particular AOL) down. They've already sold off their manufacturing division. They've been in negotiations with BMG for a merger, but can't make it work, and EMI has made a bid for the record labels (WB, Elektra & Atlantic), which if it happens (and it looks like it will) will make EMI the #2 music company in the world behind Universal. EMI the label was NEVER bought or any part of Sony Music. Just wanted to set the record straight. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

No i didn't "misunderstand". That's wrong PERIOD. First of all Prince never had a deal with EMI the label. The EMI label (which as i stated STILL exists overseas) had been shutdown before Emancipation was released. The Emancipation deal was with EMI the music company. EMI the MUSIC COMPANY never ended all deals with "indie" labels, and in addition to owning smaller "indie" distributor, Caroline STILL has deals with many other smaller labels such as Astralwerks, Nettwerk, Real World, Tooth and Nail, S-Curve, Avatar, etc. So to re-state, i didn't misunderstand what you stated, what you stated was wrong. It's okay to be wrong sometimes. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts
