I agree. When Prince produced the song for Mayte, he turned into pure commercial pop. But, Mica Paris's version is more "interesting" it has a completely different vibe. The Mica Paris version sounds more like something Prince himself would release where as Mayte's version sounds like he would've given it to Britney Spears or whoever is hot on the charts at the momement just to make a quick buck. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMHO a shit version of a good song... Mica Paris did one too, and if you can find her DJ promo 12" "mispress" (A Stand 4 Love E.P.) you will be surprised by a very nice version of Prince's demo... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

Mayte's versions are uninspiring.
Mica's version and mixes are interesting. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Who does the version on The Work Volume 1?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you picked up Studio Nights...the 6 disc boxed set of Prince's unreleased works (I picked up mine in '96), there is a version from 1980 I believe with an unnamed female singing it. She sounds quite sad and distraught (did I spell that right?).

Mayte's video for "If Love U 2night" is really beautiful...so, whenever I hear the song I remember images from the video and it makes her voice sound sweeter to me...
I like it... | |

The 1979 version is from The Rebels recording session with Gayle Chapman on vocals, I believe. . [This message was edited Mon Sep 22 8:12:23 PDT 2003 by langebleu] ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Gayle's voice moves me 2 tears sometimes! I love that huskieness in her voice.

The Gayle Chapman version is my favourite.
I know that makes me sound like a Prince-geek fanboy for liking the earliest version, but I'm not a fan of the song in general, but the Rebels version has a kind of sad, eirie, melancholy edge to it that I like. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord

It is hauntingly beautiful, like U2's version of Cole Porter's "Night+Day" and Marilyn Manson's "I Put A Spell On You". If you can't relate to the emotion expressed, it must be because you've never suffered an unrequited love or something miserably unhappy like that. But your lack of personal experience does not make a song factually bad. If you think it is bad, then that is your opinion, but Gayle's take on "If I Love You Tonight" is heartfelt, whereas Mayte was probably giggling all the way through the recording of her version because Prince was in the studio with her, the silly goose. What the fuck man! Yeah OK her voice isn't the best thing in the world, but come on girl... She's got something raw and pretty soulful in her voice, even though she sings off-key a couple of times, but that's OK... I like that version waaayyy better than the rest, save for Prince's version vocally, Gayle's version's got better music under it than all those released versions... You gotta admit it's better than that Mayte crap who couldn't sing a straight note if someone put a gun to her face... She's got a voice that resembles someone who's trying to sing while she just had shit shoved down her throat... Neversin. give me cole porter's and screamin jay hawkins' versions over the aforementioned, please. If you can't relate to the emotion expressed, it must be because you've never suffered an unrequited love or something miserably unhappy like that.
you don't have to go through any particular experience in order to "feel" a song or not, so that's pretty much null and void right there.

True, but sometimes it helps Certainly, one of the things that makes Gay Dad: Leisure Noise one of my all-time favorite albums is that the lyrics and the emotions expressed struck completely home with me.
