is the family jamm just nostalgia? you know, i was initially psyched for this. all sorts of excited to go and waiting for an announcement of an exact date. but now, the more i think about it, it seems to sound a lot like a huge overdose of nostalgia. i mean, other than sheila, wendy and lisa, its just a bunch of has beens. yeah, that sounds cold (and some would probably say the same for prince) but its honest. how many of you would honestly be going to hear these artists NEW material? how many of you would be disappointed if you went and p did not show, or more than that, would only be going HOPING that prince shows up?
i'm not knocking anyones taste, so don't take it the wrong way. i am solely speaking on my behalf. and i would definitely watch this on tv. but i'm now wondering if it is worth the airfare, hotel costs, car rentals and other necesssary expenses (like food) just to get a glimpse of the past. i mean, it really wouldn't feel the same no matter how much we'd want it to

no...it's just a benefit... yeah, that's pretty much it. it's for a worthy cause, as opposed to gettin-back-together-for-the-hell-of-it.

For a bunch of us this is our Purple Woodstock. Seeing Prince run through a greatest hits show is a form of nostalgia and there's nothing wrong with that. These artists are very much the soundtrack to my life and the big picture is the foundation of course.

well, yeah, i think sheila's idea of doing it for charity is very smart and will pull in more cash for the cause thn if she just posted a link on her website.
i'm talking more about the abilities of these performers. we know sheila e. can still perform and we can be pretty sure that wendy and lisa are still rocking. its the others that i'm addressing. i mean, they faded away for reasons, didn't they? or was it just because they were only designed to be temporary? i'm just wondering if their performances will warrant the cost of travel (not to mention the prices of the tickets). are we setting ourselves up for a let down when we get out there and it is just a bunch of aging performers who don't have it?

Sheila, Wendy, and Lisa are about as relevant outside of the org as the others. Even Prince himself isn't terribly relevant, though his name will perk up the casual listeners ears I suppose. You simply decide to do it or not if you want to. You don't have to justify it unless it's at the expense of something you know you should be doing instead. If nothing else it'll be for a good cause as people have said.

On a strictly musical basis it wouldn't be worth it to me. Only if the man behind the curtain were performing there (not just showing up). And it doesn't seem as if he's interested in this type of trip down memory lane at this point in his life. Then again (since the '80s when they were all releasing new music), I'm the type of person who doesn't have a huge interest in Prince protegés outside of a couple of his groups. However, to each their own. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

well, unless the girls (wendy, lisa, and sheila) and jesse are the ones doing a majority of the playing(which I HIGHLY doubt) it could turn out to be a sad, sad attempt to recapture 1985.
None of those performers (except the girls) are very exciting without prince being up there with them. If you live far away from where this event is taking place I really wouldn't bother to go. I, myself, will be right around the corner, so I probably will go-just for the hell of it. I think it's a great that after all these years their finally letting their gaurds down and getting to together for a benifit, but I'm not too jazed about it and I"m not too jazed to relive 1985. IMHO, Prince is really the only one who could make this work. and if prince will go at all, we're probably not gonna know until the last minute. ~KiKi

it seems to sound a lot like a huge overdose of nostalgia. nothing ii wrong with nostalgia as long as it's not a has been parade ( I don't care about the presence of St Paul..) but hey : Sheila, Wendy & Lisa - Jill - Jesse - Jellybean - Eric - Jerome..

Yes,I think the family jamm will be heavy on nostalgia, but that's not a bad thing,is it?
I go to "Super Oldies"-type shows all the time.

First of all, neither Sheila nor W&L are "has beens" in any sense of the word!
Sheila was an established musician before she ever became "Sheila E" with Prince. She toured with and played sessions for leading artists for years before Glamorous LIfe. In the last decade she continued her career, including being the first female bandleader on late night (Magic JOhnson), was a key touring and session player for Babyface, and many other artists. W&L are doing film and TV work; they won ASCAP awards for Crossing Jordan and are doing the theme for Carnivale on HBO. Regarding Prince, I really hope he DOES NOT show up! He would just take over and ruin everything. Not only would it have to be all about him, he'd probably make it all about his new religion! I want to hear the Time, Sheila, and The Family play in the style we know and love them for. Not Prince's latest musical/religious inklings. The best scenario would probably be if P came and just got on stage for an encore. Although I wouldn't mind if he just didn't come at all. Moreover, the Time & Sheila's band are perfectly able to funk it up without Prince. I've seen both of them several times and they don't need him to get down. To the thread originator, I hope you don't go because that leaves more tickets for us .

To I'mnotsaying...
My last comment was meant to be in jest (about I hope you don't go)... I looked for an emoticon of winking but couldn't find one...(I used the one with the halo). So I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend you either. You are right you didn't call Sheila a has been... I'm just very sensitive about her cuz back in the day everyone used to try and say she was just another "slutty protege" and I would always be like "no she's an enormously talented musician". But even with the others... I still think that the Time, the Family, etc. will be able to do a great show. And of course I expect/hope they'll play the stuff from back then. 1984-86 was the greatest period of music to me. I hope they recreate it and make it even better. A great example is Sheila's house of blues live set. She does Love bizarre and When Doves Cry but makes them even better than they were to begin with. And IMO, I realy thinkg Prince would make things worse cuz he's changed too much and it wouldn't be a fun thing but whatever he wants to preach about today. Just my opinion.

oh, its all good...its all music at the end of the day. i almost agree with you, though, about prince possibly f'n things up. it would only be worth going (to me, mind you...i'm talkin' bout me here lol) if the revolution and sheila jammed together.
but i don't know...i'll probably be there regardless of this thread

Well I agree with you about Sheila and the Revolution... I guess I just ASSUMED she would join them. Remember those extended jams of Baby I'm A star and I would Die 4 U??? Sheila always joined them and did her thang on the percussion!!! To me that was the best incarnation of all...Purple Rain-era Revolution with Sheila on Percussion and Jerome (not the other 2) for stage antics!!!
