For one, Prince does not, I repeat, not record 'live' while in a studio session - and that I say in the light of a final product. Of course he did N.E.W.S. 'in one day' and 'he gave us a key and we all just started playing', but that gives him plenty of room to extend and crop his product - not to mention the extensive technical issues involved in his production (the overdubbing of guitar and synth, sound effects outside the final mix, cleaning up errors). Do not ever think N.E.W.S. came out directly the way it is heard. Second, it would mean a disregard to the composer's artistical integrity. Prince's body of work is created in different settings, era's, emotions, locations etcetera. Each composition has its own story, its own circumstances, and the choices made make up for a lot of the final product. Completely lacking respect and re-recording those images of distant times is artistically walking a tightrope. Choosing to re-record those songs 'live' with the New Power Generation would mean a fixed set of choices regarding the sonic progression of the material. He would simply destroy his gems - think about '1999: the new master'. And completely re-recording two first two discs, but sustaining the rare outtakes - exactly what a fan wishes - is nonetheless inconsistent with the project's mission. And please don't think that a band can deliver the same energetic performance without the input of a live environement. Finally I can say that the atmosphere in the project would completely loose Prince's holy war against his past, his public's expectations and his very own much anticipated artistic freedom. Fin. I would like to have had the original outtake versions of songs like Come, Endorphinmachine, Days Of Wild And The Ride. Who needs even more re-recorded versions? Certainly not I. I won't be buying this. Bummer. And typical.
