what about this song reminds you of Prince? I know that Pharel said he wrote this song with Prince in mind, but I can't hear anything that makes me think of Prince when I here it. I has that simple keyboard guitar riff throughout the song, but Prince doesnt use guitar sounds off of keyboards in his songs. But even if he had use the track, which I'm glad he didn't, would it even get that much airplay? I have nothing against the song. I dont dislike it, nor do I like the song. You just can't write a song for Prince, cause 99.999% of the time its not gonna be Prince quality. Prince has wrote plenty of songs that didn't match the bar of the stuff he has done before, or after. But personally I would just rather here Prince singing mediocre to horrible Prince ( Come, Choas and Disorder) than sing something that someone wrote for him. Covers are one thing, but this is another. I could hear this song being on Rave though, but thats not saying much compared to past and present efforts.

However,"frontin'" is clearly not good enough to be a "Prince" song.It is actually kinda' wack...

Pharrell does well singing hooks and singing the N.E.R.D stuff. This is stretching his "singing" concept to the limit.I read a reviewer describe "frontin'" as a joke taken seriously or something like that.I agreed. It is catchy, though. It's just that EVERYONE would be complaining if Prince had really recorded this and released it...

nod

I agree in a way. Frontin' is a bit weak but so is Poom Poom dammit lol @ least Frontin' would have him back on the radio, which he seems to want despite saying it don't matter to him.

The reason I thought of P when I heard it is b/c of the lyrics & falsetto. It's certainly not a "great" song, but it's catchy & my boy would be getting airplay...

To me,the song definitely has a Prince feel to it.Falsetto vocals over a simple,stripped-down arangement reminds me of "Kiss" or "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic".

As far as the lyrics go, I just don't see Prince saying anything like, "I was just Frontin'". Prince has had a number of songs that were simple like Frontin is, but he was still being clever in the process. He was still saying things in a way that no one else could think of saying. Im not saying your wrong, I respect your opinion, but I just dont see it. But I see what your saying as far as the falsetto goes. As far as him getting back on the radio goes? Frontin is no better sounding than Greatest Romance, and you see how far that goes. But Im really diggin the complex mature Prince right now, and I think TRC ONA etc. has a more honest feel than Frontin does, I think if would have use that song it would have came across as him tryin, 'Frontin' if you will, like a lot of Rave came across to me, than true.

But "Poom Poom" was never released as a single, so it's only cringe-worthy to his most ardent fans. Prince's cringe-worthy songs tend not to be singles. biggrin And there's no guarantee that Prince's name on "Frontin'" would mean it would garner airplay. That takes lots of $$$. I'm sure he'd welcome airplay with any of his own songs, but with the fusionesque NEWS coming on the heels of ONA Live, and TRC, I don't think he expected airplay anytime soon. There's a good chance he'd have to compromise his music for that, and lately he doesn't seem interested in that. But that could change sooner or later. With his last few releases he's been more true to himself than with albums like Rave and NPS. Does Prince singing "Frontin'" really ring true to you, Cal? confused

didn't know having mere hits is what makes the artists have you ever thought maybe Prince is not looking to make "hits"?

what's up with you? PharrellSetto has that Randy Watson thing down pat.I can see one Handclap for His Singing.I Knew somebody would bring Randy Watson to Live&it was hard to pick out of Pharrellsetto,Ja Rule,Busta Rhymes&some other Rappers who are finding a 2nd Career as Singers.but PharrellSetto with His own Brand of Falsetto Singing has taken it.

I thought it had more of a Curtis Mayfield vocal style going on in there. Anyone else agree?

To me it sounds like Pharrell had a Michael Jackson/Stevie Wonder collabo on his mind when he wrote that song (ie "I Can't Help It").

that what i was thinkin' when I first heard the song, that break down sounds like Jamiro'. and so does that Justin Timber' song Rock your body. Im not familiar with any of Jamro music, but it sounds like one of those singles he had

Perhaps I should rephrase - it's not that I can completely see P coming up w/ lyrics like, "I was just frontin". It's not the exact phrasing, but something in the WAY he's talking about their relationship:

Don't wanna sound full of myself or rude,
But you ain't looking at no other dudes cause you love me (I'm sorry but so sexy).
So you think about a chance, you find yourself trying to do my dance,
Maybe cause you love me (Uh, you do it well).
So then we tried - ain't feeling this love now,
Because you weren't used to how fast we touched (fast we touched).
Then we locked eyes - and I knew I was in there,
And I was gon' tear ya ass up (tear ya ass up).

I know that I'm carrying on, nevermind if I'm showing off,
I was just frontin (you know I want ya babe).
I'm ready to bet it all, unless you don't care at all,
But you know I want ya (you should stop frontin babe).

Trying to be the best girlfriend you could be,
But still you sneak and look at me, and girl I love it.
Then you give your other girl a shove, tell her you gon' palm her ass like it was,
And she's gon love it (whoa-oh whoa, yeah yeah).
So then we tried - ain't feeling this love now,
Because you weren't used to how fast we touched (fast we touched).
Then we locked eyes - and I knew I was in there,
And I was gon' tear ya ass up (tear ya ass up).

I'm not saying it's P, but it's reminiscent of some of P's shit in tone & delivery. Call me nuts biggrin

Also, Frontin is more commercial than Greatest Romance IMO, so that comparison doesn't really wash to me. I do think Prince still wants airplay - I think he goes back & forth between (that "shit don't matter" & "damn, I want it back!"). Again, call me nuts...

True dat, true dat smile I still think the man vacillates erryday - he wants airplay BUT he's stubborn & wants it on his own terms (GO to somebody for a hit?? PLEEZE!!) & @ this rate he ain't likely to get it (not in markets outside of Adult Contemporary or something)...

The Neptunes have that retro-R&B/funk sound that Jamiroquai specializes in.So yeah,I can see the similarities.

And we will never really be able to tell if "Frontin" was genuinely hit-worthy, because it was beaten over our heads and into our eardrums by every radio and music video programmer around.
