This album truely only gets better with age. Every time I play this album, its like a fine wine, every instrument, sound and vocal is just bliss to the ears. And thats just the music, the meaning and reason behind this whole prodject is just amazing, and inspiring. This is what its all about, taking that next step. Thats exactly what prince did in this case.

I love the sound of the guitars, it has that sound that no other prince album has.. If only this was remastered!

It's records like this that will get Prince into the Hall (no, not the Kingdom Hall.. the one in Cleveland) on the first go round. His peers will respect him for ground-breaking, cross-over grease like Dirty Mind.

ooohhh I agree. I used to listen to this album over and over and over. It takes me to another place and time...I loose myself and forget where I am. This is one of those albums that you can listen to with headphones and escape into his dirty little world. Dirty Mind is possbily my favorite prince album. I was so young when I first listened to it that I had no idea what "head" was.

Compared to how long albums have gotten in later years, DM is short and sweet. And I wouldn't have it any other way. That's part of it's punk attitude and purpose. Prince's first garage-type album. He just didn't give a damn and unleashed his id upon the world. Yet, outside of critics and a small "cult" (I hate using that word) of fans the world didn't care til a few years later.

It's absolutely one of his best. Very punk by design, but it had the groove. And his manifesto couldn't have been represented better. He'll never create something as great as that. Well, besides his subsequent '80s releases anyway.

yeah, I used to play "UPTOWN",over and over on my reca playa, some P songs do get old , but uptown, dirty mind , when u were mine, never get old, no matter how many times u play them, his shortet abum but one of his best.

damn i love this album so much, so unpolished, so imperfect, but so good.

This IS prince, where it all began IMO.He never bettered this.

Prince should play A LOT more rhythm guitar on his albums. He's wonderful at it and it isn't showcased nearly enough. Dirty Mind is definitely his first masterpiece.

The album is very beautiful in it's simplicity. It's pure, yet raw at the same time.

From the album cover to the actual music inside... it has a lot of "what you see is what you get" kind of feel to it. No one could ever accuse Prince of "over-producing" Dirty Mind.

From a historical perspective, the other thing that is often forgotten about this album is that it represents a huge departure from how Prince was being received by the music industry and his audience in general. As "Squirelgrease" said, this is a true "cross-over" album for Prince. Prior to Dirty Mind, Prince had been thought of only as an R&B artist (even though he had a couple of rock-like songs on his previous albums). But Dirty Mind is where music critics and the like were FORCED to start taking note of a young and rising star. After Dirty Mind, Prince could no longer be ignored - period. He HAD to be recognized at that point because no one had done anything like that by switching so easily and effortlessy into another genre of music.

most of ya'll awready know how much i dig this album and the era itself. i could only imagine how i'd react to this if i were of age in 1980 and had dug prince from the get-go, y'know...used to stuff like "i wanna be your lover", "soft and wet" and whatever--then this! it had to have been one helluva turnaround for ya'll old-skoolers. seemed like his first musical litmus test, for sure.

kick-ass album, and the beauty of it is that it's only like a half-hour long in full!! short, sweet, and to the point...wouldn't have it any other way.

best thing about it is that it came out about a couple months before i wuz born.

'Dirty Mind' rocks!!

I just love this album.As someone pointed out,it's Prince's first masterpeice.The guitar sound on this record is amazing.This record contains at least two classics: "Head" and "When You Were Mine".Just the other day,I was blasting "Partyup" while driving to work...lol...that song is STILL da jam!

I remember the fall of 1980 when this record was released.The song "Uptown" got some airplay on R&B stations,and there was a huge buzz surrounding this album.Everybody was talking about it.You could tell that Prince was on his way to the top.

His first masterpiece, everything about it is just perfect.

It was a very good start, but Prince improved and really kicked our asses later.

"Do It All Night" is my favorite song off the album and very underrated song in my opinion. I agree with DavidEye. This album rocks.

Oh yeah. I was just watching that old SNL clip of P back in his Dirty Mind glory. He and his rebels ripped thru "Partyup" and showed us how it was done. Good Times, good times.

I was born the year it was released but I am so glad that I had to buy it way after it was released because in the more recent years I think I appreciate it more when I contrast it with what's out today. It really makes you understand why you have to give it up to Prince.

this album is perfect and it is the soundtrack to sooo many good memories!I was already a fan of Prince's when this cme out,but I wasn't prepared for this!!It blew my mind!!I have probably played this album about 10,000 times with mant more to go!!

At the point of fisrt hearing this,I had listened to his earlier stuff,the Jacksons,my pop's Bitches Brew lp,and all the funk and pop on the radio.I hadn't really listened to rock except Doobie Bros.,etc.This album was REAL rock in its spirit!It was rebellious and genius at the same time.It was a guy who semed like he was tired of people telling him what to do and he knew he had a vision.So,he jsut exploded on tape!No more pretty pop and wet panty soul.The whole thing just killed me!!It will always be one of the greatest albums of all time!!
