I'm not a guitar player. B B King in the top 10? Hmmm? I thought I read once or saw on TV that in an interview B B King himself stated that he was not good with playing chords. He did not, does not play chords, for the most part. He plays note by note blues melodies. So I can see how such a Rolling Stone list is flawed.
I would think a great guitar player should be able to do chording, melodic soloing, rhythm, etc. Do it all, in other words.

No, BB doesn't play chords, but that doesn't detract from his influence and influence should be taken into account with these silly lists, and they do get to be silly. The thing is, a magazine like Rolling Stone isn't going to state their criteria because it's partly about who's popular. Jimi usually tops these sort of polls because in part, his influence is so widespread as to be irrefutable by anybody who knows anything about it.

And contrary to popular belief, being able to recreate a riff here and there that some other legend played first doesn't make a guitarist the equal of another. It's about more than that. But since this is Rolling Stone we're talking about here, it's not worth seriously defending or being upset about.

Playing chords is crucial if that's your style; especially if you're gonna play rhythm. BB don't play rhythm. BB's on the list cuz nobody in rock & roll was bending strings to get that crying effect that he gets. T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian had that going on before, but BB was the guy a lot of the Brits copied it from.

I may be late on this, but I just saw the article in the store. RS did a major fuck-up: That pic in #47 is Garry Shider not Eddie Hazel.

Right? American Idle and Olsen Twins on the cover..RS has really lost the plot.

Dude, the Olsen twins are incredible musicians. Haven't you ever heard "Brother For Sale?"

Yeah, they're changing the face of music as we know it!

Unlikely. But I bet B.B. does, since he and Albet Collins covered T-Bone's "Stormy Monday Blues" back in the day. I used to think that was B.B.'s until I found out otherwise...but that's another thread.

Duh! It's not like he isn't recognizable in that outfit. Goes to show that none of the editors have ever seen P-Funk live, huh? That's like a literary magazine where none of the editors have read Hemingway. So how seriously should we take that bunch of losers? Exactly. On a side note, it IS great to see Garry in a magazine like that, even if it is because of a cock-up! dancing jig
