Oh, shut Up! I'm staying up till midnight to post for "Rave"!
1999 is a killer album. One of my personal fave is "A-U-T-O-matic". I first got it on my 10th birthday back in 1985. It was the album of choice for the long drive (45 minutes to an hour) to my aunt and uncle's house on weekends. "Let's Pretend We're Married" was also the dirtiest little song I had heard at the time, until I bought "Dirty Mind" a few months later and heard "Sister".

Ah, my first Prince album! A true classic, and as a matter of fact, I still have the sticker as shown above on the cover. It's all faded and looks pink now, but I still got it. Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

Now THAT is an album. Simply one of the all-time classics. Even the outtakes from this period are extraordinarily good. Prince was on a creative roll back then. [This message was edited Mon Oct 27 6:50:11 PST 2003 by scififilmnerd] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

Happy 21st, 1999! Let me buy you a drink! I owe you one for all that you've done for me!
1999 and I have aged very well together. It was my first Prince album, my first succulent taste of the vibrant and diverse world that is music. I still remember sneaking my brother money to buy me the tape- my Mom would not have approved its presence in her house. 1999 is my blood. That album has taken me everywhere since I was about 10 and it continues to grow on me and I continue to grow with it today. "Something in the Water" has been my lifeline many, many times and "1999," "DMSR," "Delirious," "Automatic," "Lady Cab Driver" and "All the Critics Love U in New York," among others have planted themselves as my roots. I was just a young, nerdy white kid with lots of passion and bouncing off the wall with endless interests when 1999 entered my consciousness. This will sound cheesy, but for every night I spent upset about being an outcast, being called too skinny, too smart, too effeminate, too nice, too intense and too colorful, for every vote I got for homecoming queen, for the endless jibes I got as a consequence of being me, I needed solace. I found it in 1999. Imagine, a 5'3" ethnic mutt who had gone through everything I had became my champion with this album. That bitterness and anger that echoes in "Lady Cab Driver" was my own as well and to hear someone express it as he did throughout the entire album, coming from his background, and delivering it with a sound that filtered through every fiber and taught me a new way to feel and think, I knew that this album was special. My own yearning to be more than a doormat was echoed in several of the songs, whether it be in the lyrics ("Something in the Water," "Lady Cab Driver," "Let's Pretend We're Married") or the "I'll show you who's a badass now" sonic explosion ("DMSR," "Automatic," "All the Critics Love U in New York," "1999"). A lot of this didn't dawn on me until many years after I first heard it, but my lifelong struggle is voiced perfectly with this album, and as such, it takes on a much deeper impact than would appear on the surface. Maybe that's why I often buy additional copies of the album even when they aren't needed, or I give it away through the drive thru to cashiers who show interest. Maybe it's because 1999 has become my story too, and I want people to know it. Maybe it's because I want others who feel the same way to have an outlet as well. One thing is for sure: when that nice remaster finally sees the light of day, it will be like having my life flash before my eyes through a new, much more intensely focused lens. I take pity on the person who has to hear me listen to it all tearful and reflective. So hats off to you, 1999, my familiar friend and staunch ally. I will defend you to the death as you have done for me! Call me a fam if you wish, but this album just transcends me.

Moonbeam brought a tear to my eye...
This album was one of the first records I bought. My mom was cool and gave me some money for it, but the guy at the store told her she may want to listen to it first. I got home and put it on the turntable and my Dad was freaked out by the eye that kept turning in the middle. I was rebelling for the first time and I listened to this record with headphones only until I made a cassette for my boom box. This album made me feel cool and I was the first one to turn the whole school on to it. We had an airband contest that year and I won imitating Prince singing 1999. I love this record. I love the lyrics the messages, the twist and turns and the street underground vibe. It was sex, funk punik and new wave. The band was multi racial and multi gendered. It was cool and still is the coolest record of all time. I can still picture Prince in the basement of his purple house laying these tracks down.. Here's to 1999...Don't worry I only want you to have some fun...Mommy why does everybody have a bomb...Jamie Starr is a thief...Let me take you round the world... ______________________________________________

testimonial time, have a pepsi (sowwy, it's all i have so dont'cha ask for anything else!)... 1999 is the cause for some of both my fondest and not-so-fondest memories. the most immediate unfond memory i have is that the title track was the theme song to my prom...but the dj who was playin music didn't even play it at all!!! that's one of the main reasons why i went to prom, to at least hear that song... also, a couple of girls who were on my high school's prom committee were actually arguin over what the name of the song "1999" wuz...'twas fucked up, indeed. they had came up to me, the lone prince geek of my class, in order to get shit straightened out. prom ended up not bein too bad, btw--the theme colors were violet and silver. o-tay, now for fond memories: i remember when i first bought a copy of this album. i was about 17 or 18 when i got it--i bought it at southridge mall back in my hometown, des moines. i had my lil' walkman with me so i could listen to the tape on my way back home from the mall. i knew about the first three tracks of the album from the radio (and never really liked, cuz they got played like they were goin outta style--to this day i still skip the first 3 trax). s'like, my first introduction to the world that wuz 1999 was "let's pretend we're married". ended up lovin that song to bits...the infamous "wanna fuck the taste outta your mouth" line had me thinkin in a cross between "oooh, i'm tellin!" and "oooh, can that actually be done?" the rest of the album i ended up diggin as well, and it got a lotta airplay on my chintzy lil' stereo at home. amazingly my dad didn't mind at all that i listened to prince, so i listened to my heart's content in my bedroom all the time. i remember when i finally got a copy of the album on cd and seein that semi-nekkid pic of p on the inner sleeve....even though you can only see like ¼ of his booty-crack, it's still yummy. i just got a hold of my first 1999 concert videos earlier this year and i love 'em all to bits! the 'triple threat' tour tape that i have is interestin...i remember the first time i watched it and seen vanity 6's act, i swear i felt some of my brain cells just go "duuur!" their act was that vacant to me...after they were done i wuz sittin there like, "um, what just went on?" ...there it is.
