Prince Has Been Nominated for Induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame!!!!!!

Yes, it is true, Prince FINALLY is getting his props by being nominated for induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame right here in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio!! woot! dancing jig yay!

Here is the story that I copied from today's Cleveland Plain Dealer. I tried going to their website and doing a copy and paste, but this computer at work is a total shitbox and it wouldn't let me. pissed This computer is as slow as a turtle. sad

"George Harrison, Prince Among Rock Hall Nominees

Are George Harrison, John Mellencamp and Prince headed for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Stay tuned. The late ex-Beatle and the artists formerly known as John Cougar and a squiggly glyph are among 15 acts nominated for induction next year on the rock hall's latest ballot.

Harrison, Mellencamp and Prince are first-time nominees, along with Traffic and ZZ Top.

Nominated again after being snubbed in the past are Black Sabbath, Jackson Browne, the Dells, the "5" Royales, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gram Parsons, Bob Seger, the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith and the Stooges.

The contenders range "from the real foundations of the music we celebrate all the way up to current times, with artists who are still filling venues around the world", said Terry Stewart, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Harrison was inducted in 1988 as a member of the Beatles. He's back on the ballot for his solo achievements, including topping the charts with "My Sweet Lord" and spearheading a 1971 benefit concert for famine-stricken Bangladesh.

Harrison died in 2001 after a long battle with cancer.

Mellencamp is no stranger to Top 40 success, to the tune of "Jack & Dianne", "Pink Houses", "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." and other singles. The heartland rocker from Seymour, Indiana, co-headlined last Sunday's Farm Aid concert in Columbus with Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Dave Matthews.

Minneapolis Native Prince (real name Prince Rogers Nelson) released his debut album "For You" in 1978. Embracing rock, pop and funk, the prolific superstar has a long list of hits to his name, including "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss".

Fronted by singer-keyboardist Steve Winwood, the British classic-rock band Traffic issued six solo albums between 1967 and 1974, inlcuding "John Barleycorn Must Die" and "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Bows".

Singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons, basist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard of the Texas trio ZZ Top have been a popular concert draw since the mid-'70's, thanks to "Legs" and other enduring blues-rock favorites.

This is the seventh nomination for Black Sabbath. In the past, lead singer Ozzy Osborne has asked to have his British heavy-metl group removed from the ballot.

Browne epitomizes the sensitive singer-songwriter. The Los Angeles scenester had a string of hits in the '70s and '80s, including "Running on Empty". Doo-wop favorites the Dells and "5" Royales had their heyday in t he '50s and '60s. Chicago's Dells cracked the Top 10 with "Oh, What A Night". The misleadingly named "5" Royales - a sextet, actually, from North Carolina - topped the R&B charts with "Baby Don't Do It".

Lynrd Skynyrd, the hard-rocking pride of Jacksonville, Florida, is best known for the Southern-rock standard "Free Bird". Band members Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) and Steve Gaines (guitar) were killed in a 1977 plane crash. Bassist leon Wilkeson died of natural causes in 2001.

Country-rock pioneer Parsons blazed a trail out of Los Angeles as a solo artist and as a member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He died of an overdose of morphine and tequila in 1973.

Seger, a piano-pounding rocker from Detroit, made his mark in the '70's and '80's with more than a dozen Top 40 singles, including "Night Moves".

The Sex Pistols led the punk charge in England in the mid-'70's. The group originally featured Johnny Rotten (vocals), Steve Jones (guitar), Glen Matlock (bass) and Paul Cook (drums). Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious, who died of a heroin overdose in 1979.

New York City's Smith and Detroit's Stooges, led by Iggy Pop, paved the way for punk in the late '60's and early '70's by taking a no-frills approach in rock 'n' roll.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, based in New York, oversees the induction process. Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Nominees are chosen by a committee of record company executives, music historians and journalists. Ballots are mailed to an international pool of previous inductees and other members of the music industry. The five to seven nominees who receive the most votes are inducted."

I certainly hope that Prince gets inducted, he certainly deserves it! I have been to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame several times, and I get disgusted when I don't see anything at all about Prince in there. mad If Prince does get in, I hope they have a display honoring him like they do for Michael Jackson and George Clinton, to name a few.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Being nominated is terrific but it doesn't mean he will be chosen. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that he is chosen and let's also hope that he shows up for it and kicks everyone's ass with his singing and guitar.

About time, Harrison will get it posthumously. Being dead has huge advantages for this kind of stuff.

He's no chance then. The 'music historians' might vote for him though.Just hope the execs aren't from WB or the journalists aren't from Rolling Stone.

How many get in?

Harrison is in, no doubt, especially now he's dead.

If there's more than just one get in, I can't see how he'll be kept out by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and John Mellencamp.

Patti Smith should get in though. Hey, they could do a duet!

Ok, from the RnR HoF website:

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

He's in then. No problems. Prince? Influential?? - oh yes!

Even though he is a no-brainer 1st-ballot HOFer, he could get snubbed.

How about WarnerElektraAtlantic (Ahmet Ertegun - head of Atlantic)? How about Jann Wenner (Rolling Stone)? Both are on the comittee.

A waste.

Prince has a way of being very blinkered, this would be a celebration of his entire career, not just where he's at now, and an artist should respect that, and do something appropriate that honours their past contributions as well as their present.

Look, Warner might want to have P in, now that I think about it. The publicity generated behind it would help sell more of his back catalogue and WB could take credit for launching him. I thought WB was a great label for him, BTW.

In any event, if P is elected, do you think Warners would finally release a collector's edition Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon on DVD, and/or Universal or MCA would FINALLY produce a Sign O' The Times DVD?

hmmm
What will this nomination bring to his career if he is chosen?
hmmm
Will he actually show up and put on one of his world famous performances?
hmmm
Will he acknowledge his past jams with a positive vibe instead of a "I have to talk about them" vibe?
hmmm

Either way, woot! Boy, am I happy that he has been nominated! clapping

I've not given an opinion of whether or not he'll be inducted during his first time eligible, because I have no idea. Just posting some info. What you say about his back catalog moving units because of the publicity is probably true though.

However, as far as those movies go I'm not sure if the contractual agreements for those specific DVD's of his movies would allow for a go-ahead without Prince's collaborative permission. Of course, he'd get money for those things, but we all know how stubborn Prince is - even when it comes to something that would seemingly be great for his career. Until he gets together with the powers that be to reissue/remaster some of his back catalog, I have no reason to believe that Prince is not still spiteful toward his former employer.

Like you, I don't believe WB was "the devil" - at least not while those people were there who were in his corner. But in later years the company had an influx of different head honchos, and it didn't effect Prince exclusively. There's a lot of things that we (i.e. those of us who weren't there) don't know about that went on. All we know is that Prince didn't like the contract he signed and got out of there eventually because he was disgruntled them, and they with him. We don't know all the details that comprise of the entire story.
