OK... Now I'm trippin'.
A friend that works for a major group (that will remain nameless) said he was listening to some incredible Prince instrumental stuff... I asked if it was Xpectation or N.E.W.S. "Nope... I think it's earlier stuff..." I asked if it was Madhouse, or the "Minneapolis Genius" stuff. "Nope... I think it's earlier stuff..." So he sends me a copy, and by the sound, and by the instruments used, it sounds like something from 1975-1976. Mostly ALL Jazz/Fusion, and some funk, and even an Afro-Pop tune that reminds me of King Sunny Ade's guitar playing. I was (and am) blown away... I thought I knew everything about P's musical output and skills. I was always the one telling people, "That's him on all instruments... even percussion and drums" Then I hear this stuff, and I'm thinking: "Is he really only about 18 years old on this?" The drumming is fantastic... even on the jazz stuff. The Bass Guitar is prominent, and versatile. The keys are mostly Rhodes, and like one synth. It definately sounds like him on all instruments. Can anyone tell me details about PRE-WB recordings, demos, etc. There are no titles. When U listen 2 this, it's so easy to understand that Prince (as I always believed) is a musician FIRST, performer SECOND. Even in my musically diverse mind, it's actually hard for me to understand how he became the Princely Pop Craftsman, being the musical monster he was. I guess I'm also sayin' that folks should realize that he's gone back to his musical roots, but in a much more evolved way musically. People need 2 recognize this FINALLY. Related: Did U ever notice on the credits 4 "She Spoke 2 Me", it says Prince played all the parts? Y'know the part near the end, where it turns into a swingin' Jazz number? I think that's P on drums. I have 2 listen again.

This material also suprised and stunned me when I herad it.

I played several stuff from these instrumentals(The jazz stuff) in the Cafe I work in. Andre Cymone & Bobby Z provides several inputs in these instrumentals tho(not all by Prince).

Thank you, Giovanni for the info. Why didn't WB let him release an instrumental jazz album? I am so in awe of Prince now. So, he has probably been wating all this time to be free to release music that is close to his heart. I wonder what other linitations did WB placed on his creativity and talent.
