4 people who r trippin' on the religious lyrics of *TheRainbowChildren* Controversy: the famous photo of Prince in the shower with the Cross on the wall.
Let's Go Crazy: a song about not letting the Devil get u down.tho it can b about whatever u want it 2 be,(i know when u listen 2 the studio cut of "1+1+1=3",it can b heard as a guy saying 2 his girl, "if u ain't down with having a threesome,then get the hell outta here!"...it was about God & The Devil. 
Darling Nikki: backwards msg saying "hello,how r u? im fine cuz i know that the lord is coming soon." Purple Rain Tour: the interludes & theatrics,where Prince interacts with God. God: nuff sed. 4 The Tears In Your Eyes: beautiful song,great emotion. The Cross: clearly one of the greatest rock songs of all time.all about god/jesus. Lovesexy: his most amazing project musically with TRC.Religion played a huge part in the making of this album.Infact,the main inspiration. Elephants & Flowers: "there will b  4 those who love god" ...& this tune is one of his funkiest.Definately on my summer jams cd.
The Undertaker: "dont let the devil make u,dance with the Undertaker" just a few xamples of Prince using religion in some of his funkiest moments. Now i wonder why people trip on the use of religious lyrics in The Rainbow Children. Perhaps because b4 he was king of the hill,everyone knew who Prince was & loved/admired him. now deep down,fans just want a hit & know that a song like Muse2thePharaoh isn't going 2 get played on the airwaves. i think this is possibly the reason. & The deep voice?. ...on Bob George it is funky. people love camille: a high voice. so why hate on it now? perhaps for the same reason people maybe against the religious lyrics. I'm not religious.But i think people contradict themselves. or r just scared 2 admit that TRC is a masterpiece. OR Just the old 'Prince fans finding something 2 complain about' thing. You missed out The Second Coming acapella tune which introduced the later Controversy shows. That went much farther than TRC, IMHO.
Even reciting the Lord's Prayer in the actual Controversy song. If he did something like that now everyone would freak. "But it was balanced out by sexy lyrics" some might say but then I would smugly reply "What about Mellow on TRC. A sexier song he has rarely emoted." 'Wet circles around the toy while you bring yourself to joy.' These are not the words of a religious zealot, lost in the cluthches on the JWs. TRC is the work of a man who likes fucking with people's minds and their conceptions of him. He's still the exact same mixed up madman he always was...it's all there between the lines. As Prince put it: I'm in love with God. He's the only way, cuz you and I know we gotta die someday. I am in love with God and believe that Jesus died for our sins. That is not the problem. Prince spoke before of loving God and Jesus in a kind of universal, nondenominational type way. The way he speaks of the Father now excludes people. If you believe Jesus died on the Cross, too bad for you. According to his new faith, that just ain't true. He speaks of a faith that tells people they are the one true faith, the right religion. There lies the problem. | |

It's not about the message, it is about the way in which it
is delivered. It didn't seem forced or contrived before whereas now it is delivered in a way that seems to suggest it is mandatory to believe in these things. On top of that, the lyrics are far less imaginative than oh for example "Anna Stesia". He mentions Jesus in Anna Stesia, but something about the song makes it ok. I appreciate the religious overtone in that tune. I have absolutely no problem with TRC, since I think it is one of his best albums. But "The Everlasting Now" and also "Last December" are a bit too much for my taste. Accurate knowledge of Christ and The Father In the name of the Father in the name of the Son we need to come together as One It's simply tacky. To compare: Lyrics like "The Cross/Anna Stesia" are like a beautiful Madonna&Child sculpture by Da Vinci whereas Lyrics like "Last December/PropsNPoundz" are like one of those tacky little madonna statues with christmaslights in it and gold halos with twinkling stars around it's head. That's why I don't like the lyrics of the latter part of the TRC album. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps | |

and the really major difference between those examples and TRC is thus:
Prince, up untill now now, always had one foot in the corpulant and on foot in the spiritual. it was balanced, and oddly enough, fairly harmonious. Cut to the Rainbow Children, which is almost entirely religious/political material. There is no balance. Personally I am an athiest, and I LOVE "the cross". I LOVE "let's go crazy" but do i want to hear him do an album full of nothing but religious based songs? not really. do I want to hear him do an album of nothing but "i wanna fuck the taste right outta your mouth" type songs? dear god, no. because it would get really old really fast. that having been said, i appreciate TRC. the music is some of his best. lyrically... well, i can overlook it for the silly fairytale it is, cause despite his best efforts, that album ain't gonna convert nobody. it's about as much incentive to become a believer as the religious people who use the bible to judge and persecute others is. really my only problem with it is that annoying ass voice that distracts from the music, and call me crazy, but it is a music album, shouldn't the music be the focus? and half the time i am trying to figure out what the hell the voice is even saying. it's a LOT different from the bob george voice that is pretty easy to understand. oh so true. Mellow is intensely sexy. Sensual Everafter is sex minus lyrics.just listen. She Loves Me 4 Me is just a beautiful romantic RnB song. Last December/Everlasting Now r purely inspirational. their serve a purpose: 2 bring light & happiness & hope in2 everyone's life. He just also brings his own perspective in2 it. Prince's religious content pre-JW seemed as if he were connected with his spirituality, like it was a part of the blood that went through him, like his God would exist whether anyone believed in it or not, so why not just celebrate love and life and all that comes with it.
Prince's religious content now seems more as if he is under the influence of doctrine, it feels disconnected, stilted, forced. Where there weren't borders before, I feel that there are walls built now. At the very least, that's taken some getting used to. And whatever happened to using metaphors and wordplay in his lyrics? His songwriting is getting more and more literal in tone, and as a result it's getting clunky and amateurish, when we all know he's capable of nothing short of genius. I was relieved when I heard this year's new release was instrumental. | |

What religion that you know of doesn't claim they are the best. Everyone has a right to believe what they want to believe in. All religions speak of teaching others!!! If you don't want to listen than don't listen. People act like because Prince speaks about his religious faith it is an abomination. When people win awards and they say "I want to thank God because if it was not for him I would not be here accepting this award". Aren't they preaching religion too. If you don't believe in God you have the right to say and/or preach why you don't believe. Everyone has a right to his or her own beliefs. When Prince denies you access to join NPGMC or attend concerts because of your faith than complain and be upset. | |
