'Genius' - This term refers to the highest level of intellectual or creative functioning or to a person possesing such capabilities. Although there have been several efforts at giving an explicit definition of what makes a genius (e.g. at one time an IQ of 140 or over was used), such attempts have only provided us with illusory objectivity. unfortunately, there does not appear to be any clear set of attributes that defines the term. Furthermore, the common language has played such havoc with the term that its usefullness is now suspect. For instance, Whilst watching some short coverage of the most recent VMA's, two interviewed artists stated at the 'genius' of their work collegues i.e. producer, video director).

In considering this, I raise the question - Is Prince a musical genius? Yes or No? Indeed, is it possible to be a 'former genius'? In that, greatness which was once prevalent appears now to be obsolete.

Provide evidence to support and demonstrate which side of this argument you subscribe to.

Personally, Genius is the character, feelings and xostential notion of motion that makes the sigh of the highs.. inside your being that surrenders to the all that is seen and being able to take note of the changes that seem to happen and turn them into a POT OF GOLD... even without speaking a word... GENIUS is... MAKING LOVE to everything u can possibly touch and breath and showing a positive/negative balance towards the outcome of the transitional paths presented... within your life and touching the lives of others without question and with COMPLETE and POWERFUL manifestation to yourself... UNCONDITIONALLY...

I would say that prince is a genius. I dont know another word which suits his ability well enough. Calling Prince a great musician doesnt do the mans talents justice. I would say his greatest live moments would account for his genius. Although my opinion may be regarded as being biased as im a fan!

The line is inbetween being called a genius and actually being one. I'm not going to try and define that! I would like to believe Prince is a Genius but I'm not confident in my own position to put Prince there.

GENIUS is as previously mentioned in my statement and is HIGHLY CONCLUSIVE in this one 2...

ACTUALLY, to play music well takes HIGHER BRAIN functioning...most things we do use the LOWER BRAIN...and the more complex the music, the higher functions of the brain are needed to be used. Prince has some very complex aspects to his music...his vocal gymnastics...scalic patterns throughout his music...personally, as a Conservatorium trained musician myself, some of the things I've heard from Prince ARE genius!

People work in different ways. Someones art reflects who they are, some people will like to listen to it, some don't, thats all. Genius is a hard thing to really use.

I think he's a genius in the way that he always pushed to do things his way. He got shit done. Theres respect there.

- play so well so many instruments.
- arrange
- produce
- compose
- sing
- perform
- has managed to create his own style or own touch
- has had so much impact on music (see the numerous impersonators)
- can play a great 3 hour set and then reinvent himself in a night club for an aftershow for 2 hours.
- has the respect of most of the best musicians
etc...

For fuck sake Prince is a GENIUS. Which by no way means he is perfect and does everything right. Geniuses are always capable of the best and the worst. Take it or leave it.

Then of course, anyone who has studied psych will know that ppl who R considered "genius" R all these things & MORE, like more prone 2 mental illnesses, doing things "out of the norm", & generally getting bored quicker than others & needing much MORE stimulation 4 ones mind...as the mind ( especially that of a genius is 4ever "thinking" and "planning", & lots of times "overthinking" ones self into anxiety & depression etc. The more intelligent one is the more prone 2 sometimes thinking Sooo much that it is not healthy. ( worrying ) But as we followed prince through his career, we can certainly see how & why he is labeled "GENIUS". The pattern fits!
