319 [early version] I was going through some of my boots this week and I found
an old live and studio version of "319" and noticed that it sounded so much better than the released version. Even the live version where he plays additional guitar on top of the dat-tape still sounds less "overdone" than the version which ended up on the final cut of the album. I also dig the extra instrumental segments near the end of the song which were omitted from the released version. Same thing happened to Endorphinmachine & Race, both of which suffered from a case of "over-glamoramatisation". I just thank god that "Dolphin" didn't get that same kind of treatment in the last few months before Gold Experience was released. The original "Race" was also longer with cool skittish & jazzy '20's club style' jamming. The original "Endorphin" was less fussy and more driven. The Glam Slam shows from round the time he premiered all of these songs from "Gold" and "Come" are a good hinter of what the material sounded like in original/demo state. Songs such as "Loose!" and "Now" also had additional or external instrumental segments tagged on. Fcuz, playing those songs live, you always get them a bit different from the original, and shorten or extend them as you feel fit to do at a certain night in a certain mood. However, since he had that dat-tape rolling along for most of those shows, it is quite easy to make out when the tape starts and ends in comparison to the band jamming on or not at that point. Such a shame that Prince decided to let his back catalogue rot away cuz a box release of all the material from this era in original versions with outtakes and unheard tunes would be a stellar 3 disc release. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I totally agree with "Endorphinemachine". I even remember him playing it on some awards show shortly before Gold came out and it was a guitar masterpiece. Iremeber going to work the next day (record store) and talking about it with another coworker and how excited we were. ...then Gold came out and Tommy Barbarella is completly drowning out the guitar. I remember that we were both quite dissapointed that the rock had been subtracted form the song.
I'm not sure if it was Tommy's fault (probably not), but I find the keyboard from his era to be overly obnoxious.

I remember thinking the same thing..
Gold album... a guitar masterpiece with some great funk. It turned out good but songs that sounded awesome and raw sound overdubbed and sterile. Dolphin which I taped off of Letterman in 94 I played so much that the tape was ruined. So I get the disc finally and Keyboards are drowning out the guitar... My opinion is that songs stuck around for too long and he just kept overdubbing. Music is the best...
