And for every one lyric like that you can come up with, there are probably five countering it with racial/cultural consciousness. So that means nothing.

Seriously

I don't think it has anything to do with him being semi-black

Especially when it's not that much to notice

rolleyes

If ya wanna get racial, be welcome - but that's too stupid

"Semi black?" Whaaa? sounds like u describing semi gloss paint ...and "not that much to notice?" whaaa?

lord lol

rd being "racial"

Should I spell it out for U?

He is NOT all black, and if he's a mixed nigga (sorry!) then I don't notice it. Understood?

rolleyes

"Good God, where are the intelligent ppl these days...?"

...AND there you go, it only took a matter of time before somebody was going to make a derogatory comment and then pretend that they aren't racist. rolleyes
The semi-black and then the "N" comment...nice touch there Her Royal Badness. Let me take a guess, You're white, right?

In response to the topic, I think white people were more comfortable with Prince back in the 80's and early 90's because of course he was at his peak so they wanted to be a part of the thing that's hot, and because Prince didn't pigeonholed himself into the "Black" catergory, "white" catergory. Prince was playing all music. And do to the fact that his band was majority white, his girlfriend/fiance was white, and that he was mainstream that white people "adopted" Prince as their own, because he had "Made it" so he's no longer "Black". Once Prince left WB, or was in process of leaving, He dumped the image that WB created for him and became Prince. White people got upset about the Slave written on his face, about him dumping Wendy & Lisa, (I mean Good God they still holding on to that for some crazy reason, as if they were the greatest thing since the birth of music), and dumping Susannah.(Oh yeah, they still holding on to Carmen Electra, and Kim Bassinger as if he never dated a black woman in his life) So when Prince reclaimed very vocally that which was rightfully so, that he's a black man, White people felt betrayed. Here is a rich and famous black man he's not suppose to marry a black woman, (Yes, again Mani's Black and so is Mayte...You can be Puerto Rican and Black). He's successful he didn't need change his band to all black, he's friends aren't suppose to be black, and he most definitely isn't suppose to write about being black. Prince realized who the majority of his audience was, Us, and accepted the pride of being black. The proud, conscience Prince (being a black man) that's here today, because of that.I love and respect Prince more. Some may say that he lost his way, but the point is he got it back, and that's not forgetting who you are. Coco's twocents

Dolphin (The Moorish Remix) by NPS

How whitewashed did the words have 2 be
Before they conquered every heart?
How far would you have let me go
If U knew I was black from the very start?

If I came back as a Negro
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off my kinky hair
But even with a perm, the 'fro' still grows in
And both of my parents are black
So don't be fooled by the light-skin

Why does a brother have 2 get money
And fame in order for you to return his call?
But even after then, if you're band is no longer white
They'll say you're Possessed and call it a "fall"

If I came back as a Negro
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off my kinky hair
But even with a perm, the 'fro' still grows in
And both of my parents are black
So don't be fooled by the light-skin

If I wasn't a rock star, would U embrace me--
An everyday Negro--would U face me?
It's happened before, I've knocked on your door
But U wouldn't let me in

How whitewashed did the words have 2 be
Before they conquered every heart? (Oh!)

If I came back as a Negro
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off my kinky hair
But even with a perm, the 'fro' still grows in
And both of my parents are black
So don't be fooled by the light-skin

Negro
As a Negro
As a Negro
As a Negro

Actually no. no no no!

Prince's lyric's have always tried to raise above race and culture and reach a spiritual level where color is not the focus... Prince always made a point in making race a non issue and not important, if you had an open mind.

Prince did go out of his way to make his music for everyone, and not just play one type of music. He succeeded in crossing into all walk of life and made himself a legend by not being any so called race.
But by being an original and an individual. rainbow By being himself... guitar

guitar edit...
