For those of you who either didn't realize Prince was black or know of people who didn't realize it, you are not alone. A quick search on the internet revealed the following quotes:

"Wait a minute... Prince is black? I never noticed that!"

"It is easy for a lot of people to forget that Prince is black. But he is."

"Also mistaken. Prince is white."

"Prince is black???"

Oh, come on now. Go to a music industry site and mention Axl and you'll get lots of mean-spirited jokes and derision. Mention Prince and you'll most likely get, "that guy's a genius - it's a shame I don't know what happened to him."

And within the fanbase? I can't speak for the online environment, but the fans I know and have met in person are about the most colorblind people I've met, and any "negativism" I've heard has always been about his business practices and the way he's treated women over the years. Does that translate to ragging on him because he's black? I don't think so. Get a fan of Phil Spector going and you'll most likely hear a lot of the same criticisms.

We kvetch because we care, you know.

That and we want our NPGMC official Prince spoon cozies.

With regard to race being "fine detail" - for other artists I'd agree with you, but for Prince his most famous era was as an androgynous pop-pixie. I mean, we all know Bono is a white guy from Ireland. We all know Bob Marley is a black guy with dreads. Prince is known not as a black entertainer but as a "skinny pale androgynous pop star who might be gay and wears purple and frilly shirts and high heels". The cartoony image Prince created for himself overshadowed himself as a person, as a black man, and as a musician at times.

so you're saying that all black entertainers, and black people for that matter, are supposed to dress and act the same way?

as far as I'm concerned, all of those things you mentioned were what MADE him black...in other words, it didn't seperate him from it, but it made him a unique black individual...not all black people dress the same, act the same, etc.

Prince may have played games with ethnic ambiguity, but he's not stupid, he KNEW and still knows, that he's black. The only reason he played games with it is probably because he got sick of being questioned about it. (by the WHITE media, I might add, one of whom blatantly told him to his face that he wasn't black)

i guess prince just had a lot of issues about identity back then. i read a really interesting review of the popularity of Purple Rain by a famous black film critic named David/donald? Bogle's book Coons Mulattos and Mammies about how Prince was marketed as a "tan" character rather than a black person to further his appeal to white audiences, the way he explained it was really deep and i never had thought of it that way before.. sorry i don't have the review, but anywho, this subject has been discussed with many black artist who find fame with racial ambiguity only to be dropped like a bad habit.. and by some of the posts on here it's really alarming the narrow uneducated view white ppl have of what a black person is hrmph

White people have the luxury to pretend that "there is no black or white", but people of color DON'T. Society in general won't allow for it. That crap didn't work in the 80's and it won't EVER work. The only true answer is to learn to RESPECT THE DIFFERENCES. The problem is, not enough people want to do that. Pretending is so much easier. Pretending isn't REAL, though. Some of my favorite artists are white, but I like them AND I understand and respect their culture. I don't pretend they are an "exception". I accept. So UNDERSTAND that Prince IS BLACK, ACCEPT IT, and move on.
Folks get on my nerves thinkin' that multi-racial = more than. That best of both worlds shit is BULLSHIT. Red roses are as beautiful as pink and white swirled ones. Just different, that's ALL. Same with people.
Peace.
