How much is negativism towards Prince is due to him being black?

About 10%. Seemingly mainly by jealous white males.

HerRoyalBadness is a child ya'll, I remember her posting about sex and talking about her age(being 15 or 16) I don't know why you guys get all hyped up cuz of what she said, she's just a baby lol

But seriously, I had alot of conversation with both black & white folks(and when I say white & black, I don't mean ALL, I only mean the ones that I had talked with).

White folks tend 2 like him mo' when he was in his hey-days. Now, they think he is "racist"(due 2 what they heard from TRC lol) plus, he's not a popular anymore lol you imagine that?

Black folks resented him the most when he was in his hey-days saying that none of that hype came back 2 the black communitey. Saying that they resent him 4 not eknowledging his black roots when he was at the top.

They say that he's a hypocrite cuz he only talks about "The devil white owner" and the "salve" thang when it fits his demands, he's talking about "black power" when t suited his situation but he didn't give a shit about black folks when he was at the top of the game. He didn't talk about the issues that black folks went through.

Bottom line, most black folks I talked with have no sympathy nor do they relate 2 the stuff he talk about.

However, they still dig his music nod

These type of threads are always very interesting.

I really don't have the time or will to read the entire 74 posts, but reading a few, it makes me wonder why questions like these come up.

The question posed makes me think the author loaded it with the presumption that criticism towards Prince from his fanbase comes from his white fans.

As far as I know there are a lot of black folks that still really like him, a lot of us grew up listening to him. my brothers, friends, and such all have their favorite prince song so i don't really think he's lost a lot of respect for black ppl, they didn't boo him like they used to do whitney's butt..
and this prob. goes without saying but Herroyalbaddness needs a history lesson on black folks, we come in 1001 shades babe

Honestly, I think a lot of people who aren't Prince fans are probably not aware of Prince's "ethnicity". Obviously the fact that he is a light shade ("butterscotch") coupled with all the makeup he wore in the 80s and 90s coupled with the fact that he was doing pop music meant that for a lot of people Prince the 80s popstar persona they remember is of "unspecified" racial makeup.

And of course, if someone does know he is black, it can give rise to favourable comparisons with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and other great black musicians. I've not heard it ever give rise to anything negative.

When I first got into Prince, I had no idea who he was, where he was from, or what his race was. I didn't even know he was American really. I knew what he looked like from the videos of course, but this was the 80s and his androgynous look made it hard to tell.

shrug What I said is entirely true. Loads of people I've talked to, when I mentioned I was a Prince fan etc were surprised to hear he was black. Why would they know such details, if they don't give a shit about Prince anyway?

Think about it - for most non-fans, they remember Prince has this skinny, pale, caked-in-makeup androgynous little pixie from the early 80s, poncing about in purple lace and shit, playing pop music.

I didn't know Prince's racial profile until I was more of a "fan" and had bought a few albums, and had read about him etc. Before that he was just Prince, a pop persona. Growing up in a country with a limited number of black people anyway (Ireland in the 80s was poor and had very few immigrants) Prince didn't look like any of the black men I knew at the time (e.g. James Brown, Lenny Henry, Martin Luther King).

Frankly I think his sexually and racially ambiguous look worked in his favour in the 80s, in getting crossover success etc.

Modern Ireland is very multicultural and multicoloured. Since the boom in the 90s we've had a lot of immigration etc. Plenty of black Irish people nowadays.

Back to the point though... most people who don't give a shit about Prince aren't aware he is black. A lot of people don't know he's heterosexual either, or that he lives in Minneapolis, or that he is a very proficient guitarist.

Im not stating about something so simple as someone saying "Prince is a nigger"..come on now. And even that adrogyny and Michael Jackosn recent white woman lok ..I can fo sho tell thats a black person. Come on now...

shrug What I said is entirely true.

Dizzam..Ireland must be a rednecks fantasy camp then lol.

I should have said it must have "been" a fantasy camp etc...oh I refuse to believe that those who odnt give a damn dont know Prince is black..he isnt that obscure..even in Ireland.

Well disbelieve it all you like, but it's true.

I know many people in the UK and Ireland who are not Prince fans. They remember Purple Rain, they remember roughly what he looks like - the purple, the lace, the makeup, the heels. They know his top 10 hits. But they have no idea about any of the rest of his music, or about where he is from or what his race is. Why would they be aware of that?

Not everyone is as obsessed about race as Americans y'know smile

No offense but man are u retarded..I can se her royalbadness or July saying non fans dont realize his ethnicity but come on..you tellin me the average person who isnt even a Prince fan doesn't know Prince is black?
