was finished before Prince became so resolutely against swearing on record. So most of the tracks were not censored in any way. The album is not strictly a 'hits' collection, as it contained quite a few fan-favorites that were never singles (plus the 4 new tracks), it was conceived as more of a 'best of'. Unfortunately the tracklisting is not known. But... I read recently - was it in Possessed? - that it was only an idea that came up in an interview, but Prince never really got around to re-recording any tracks before losing interest in the idea. Which I thought was good, because, well... We've all heard "1999 - The New Master", right? So are you sure he actually did do such a collection? I mean, have you heard any re-recorded songs yourself (besides "1999 - The Dreadful Master")? Because Prince also announced other albums at the same time, where fans could vote for which kinda album they'd like to get from him next - a collection of ballads, a smooth jazzy album, a rock album... And the re-recorded hits album. That don't mean any of them were done at the time of the voting. It was probably just him gauging where to go next. I mean, he DID go kinda jazzy after that, didn't he? One is the WB-GH that Prince was negociating to be part of, the other is the re-recorded hits album that of course never materialised. © Bart Van Hemelen
