After two years, The Rainbow Children has finally "got" me.

After two years, it's finally "got" me, in a way I don't remember any Prince album other than Parade and Sign getting me.

It was the live DVD that did it for me... seeing the awesome Family Name performed live... it made me want to listen to the record and finally I will give in and confess this album really was the masterpiece return-to-form many of the fans hailed it to be.

The Sensual Everafter, Digital Garden, Family Name, Everywhere, Last Decemember, Rainbow Children... this is some of his hottest material since Sign O The Times, definately far superior to any work he did post-Lovesexy.

It's just strange that it took me so long...

It took me about a few spins to "get" the album and I personally believe it is one of his best ever. I'm glad you've digged your way through the religious stuff to discover the beauty of the music on TRC!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I think the religious content put people off in their droves.

I defy anyone to find fault in the actual music

Well, "1+1+1 is 3" is the one song that actually grabbed me - but we get a verse and a chorus and then it strays into (another) aimless jamming.

sigh

Such promise... Going nowhere... Whatta waste...

It's a fantastic album IMO easily one of his best. The musicianship is second 2 none and John Blackwell could be the best drummer he's ever had.

On the one hand, I'm happy for any Prince fan who FINALLY "gets it", but on the other hand, I just want to bitch slap some of y'all for claiming to be Prince fans and then being so closed minded. It just amazes me. It took two years for you and others to finally let go of your expecations and simply enjoy the album for what it is and not what you want it to be. Good for you! Welcome!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

And that's good for you too. Just don't come on here 3 years from now saying "OMG The Rainbow Children is AWESOME!"
I mean you can but, it will be sickening, especially if you're one of the one's that trashed it.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I've always said musically it's his best since the 80's, I just can't get passed the Pseudo-Religious babble, kind of ruins it a little for me.

Still not too bad IMO.

The album is musically great and all, but the song "The Everlasting Now" makes me spontaneously poop myself.

On top of the list of my least favorite Prince songs, that one is.

Family Name is a classic, though.

Hey Cloudbuster, you're just going to have to submit to TRC! It really is an amazing piece of music. I'm so happy to see so many people finally getting into TRC. Try to ignore the religious lyrics and concentrate more on the music and his voice. If you like Lovesexy you can like TRC too if you listen without prejudice. Go for it music

You think I haven't tried. It still leaves me cold.
If you try to love Invincible then I may give TRC another chance. wink

This is an example of why I have defended the hasty negative reviews of Prince's more recent work. It is not dispoable kid stuff that rules the airwaves today. It is grown folks music. It has a depth and substance that - unfortunately - is not in style anymore. It hasnt been in style since the 80s actually. WhynI support Prince is that he refuses to sell out and lose some substance like Stevie Wonder, Kool and the Gang, and Earth Wind and Fire did.
