Tony Rich

Did anyone read the review of the new Tony Rich album in the August 18th issue of "People" barf magazine? They compared one song to "Purple Rain-era Prince" and another to "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". Has anyone heard the cd and if so how DOES it compare to Prince? I'm sure I already know the answer but I'm still curious.

This is the second Tony Rich thread today and I find it amazing that two seperate people thought of him on the same day. Very odd.

Now see if the search function was working BEN I wouldn't have had to create a new topic BEN. wink

A coworker was reading it and brought it to my attention and since 99% of the review, short as it was, was spent comparing it to Prince I thought I'd better check it out here at the .Org.

Yeah the search function needs to be fixed, but I'm sure Ben is a busy guy so I don't let it bother me big grin

Ive got the album.. I love it.. Very Prince esque... even my girlfriend who isnt the biggest Prince fan in the world, said during first listen "geee. can you tell he's a Prince fan?" I thought that was a telling sign. Its definetely alot more diverse than his previous two albums. Its a Babyface album that Prince produced.. if you could imagine that.

Check out this review of his new album. Not such a great review, but who cares. Next to Prince, this is my other favorite artist. He writes, composes and produces all of his albums. Anyway, here is the link and the article.

The Tony Rich Project:'Resurrected'

Tony Rich has resurrected alright -- as Prince . Eight years ago when the Atlantan stormed onto the pop music scene with a hit single ("Nobody Knows") and a million-selling debut ("Words"), all the comparisons were with Babyface, one of the co-presidents of his label at the time. Since then, Rich put out another CD -- which surprisingly stayed around about half a second -- and he and his LaFace bosses curiously parted ways. Buzz was the mainstream favorite had gotten a little weird. Or shall we say, "2 weird." Yep, not only is Rich doing all shorthand spelling that Prince started penning decades ago ("r" instead of "are"), the singer-songwriter-musician has come up with an album very reminiscent musically of The Purple One's better guitar-powered offerings. (A great thing). Like "Sign of the Times" and "When Doves Cry," his writing is often weird and off-putting. (A so-so thing). And to open his third CD, he kind of raps. (An unfortunate thing). Tony Rich will be performing Wednesday at Vinyl and signing CDs Friday at Tower Records.

Vocally, he's more Babyface than Prince, but musically, it's somewhere inbetween. I've got both his albums and luv 'em. On "Birdseye" (his second)there's a track called "Cool Like That" which has a very PRINCE-ish vibe 2 it and then there's his track on GUY's 2000 release ("GUY III")called "2004" - an absolute PRINCE jam if ever I heard 1.

Now he's really bringin' that rock guitar sound in2 his work, which was missin' b4. Can't see any hits off this album, but very cool, from what I've heard @ his website.

"Travel Alone", "Resurrected" and "Future Daze" r killer tracks.

Tony still lives not far from me,if I'm correct.I saw him perform recently and it was very much in a Prince style with the long codas and the rock guitars. Not bad.
