The new live DVD kinda blows

It was a pleasant surprise to see it in my local WH Smith's, but the Vegas show wasn't half as good as the one I saw in London.

1) Why was it only 80 minutes? No Rainbow Children, no Muse 2 The Pharaoh...

2) The band succeeded in ruining Take Me With You, and don't even get me started on Whole Lotta Love

3) The performance of Sometimes It Snows In April was magnificent... but why the hell did they use it to roll the credits? Talk about an atmosphere dampner!

The show made think, his setlists badly need an update. He's been performing the same 'hit selection' for way too long. Why can't he replace Take Me With U, Raspberry Beret and Strange Relationship with tracks like Controversy, Girls & Boys, Forever In My Life and Computer Blue?

And what I'd give to see him perform some of those more obscure numbers... All My Dreams, Movie Star, Electric Intercourse and She Spoke 2 Me...

Any thoughts?

On a positive note, Family Name ruled!

But I can't help but feel this was such a wasted opportunity... it could've been so much better. Would it have really been too much to ask to include Anna Stesia, Joy In Repetition and at least one or two tracks from the piano/accoustic sets he did? I got a bit tired of "Maceo can you flow" after an hour or so...

My main complaint is it doesn't have a beginning to it.
What happened to The Rainbow Children??!! If it waS about fitting in one DVD, kick Nikka Costa off and put in TRC.
No beginning, LOTS of middle.

The show was twice as long as whats shown on the dvd thats the rip off. I went to see him in Manchester and would kill to see the live version of "Sign 'O the Times" again. It was such a rockier version. Also the version of Alphabet St. was funky!

Anxiety

I think considering the energy of the performances and considering the fact that it was a measly fifteen bucks, it's not as horrible as everyone's making it out to be. Believe me, if I thought it sucked, I'd gladly express the fact, but I can't help it - I like it. Maybe it should have been called "Scenes from the Alladin" or something, but still...if you're not a tried and true Prince fan, you're probably not going to know the show started w/ Rainbow Children and you'd probably rather see it start off with Pop Life anyway. Would I like to see the whole show, with nothing cut out? Sure. Am I happy with the DVD and the box set as a document of the ONA tour? Well...yeah.

I thought the show was fantastic, all be it short.

As I've said before, this was packaged to sell and appeal to casual fans. It's short, so that they don't lose interest, it's very high energy, and the hoaky digital effects and transitions keep eyes on the screen.

For the price of $20.00, it was definitely without a doubt worth my money.

I will never understand why Prince made the dvd only 80 minutes long. Why not two hours, if not the whole concert?

Why ask why with Prince? He does some weird sh*t and the reasons behind most of it is unfathomable. Overall, he's done lots more great stuff than dumb stuff, but the dumb stuff is still frustrating when it is impossible to divine his motives.

you could just about make it out.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

i totally agree with this. 'the rainbow children' is greatly missed here.

imo most of the songs are indeed "middle" songs as you put it.
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain

Pass the Peas is great - it's what Prince is all about, funky and fun.

I think the performance of Everlasting Now is worth the price of the DVD alone.

If you do not like Pass the Peas you are not really a funk fan. Therefore, what are you even listening to Prince for?

I like the cd and purchased it because of Pass the Peas. If you want to hear the whole show pick up the One Night Alone box set.

I think the setlist (for the DVD) was actually pretty creative. One song each from his hit (80s) albums,3 in support of TRC , a few covers ,a new song and a guest spot. Its a cool package headbang
