Purple Rain had the most influence on me, because it got me into Prince.

But I'd take SOTT over PR 8 times of 10.

PURPLE RAIN with it's mixture of Pop, Rock and Funk is easily the greatest cross-over album ever , appealing 2 both blacks and whites. It, along with MJs "Thriller" broke down all those racial barriers that allow artists like Beyonce, 50 cent etc 2 rule the charts 2day.

At 1 point, PRINCE had the #1 single ("When Doves Cry"), the #1 album ("Purple Rain") and the #1 movie in the U.S.A, followed by the hottest tour of that year. Few will ever be able 2 equal that.

I'm hoping there is an extended 20th anniversary edition of "Purple Rain" cd and dvd next year just 2 emphasize how important it was.

Just as PURPLE RAIN was his greatest commercial success, SIGN O' THE TIMES is probably his greatest critical success, a timeless work of art that was supported by it's Grammy nomination 4 album of the year, but without PURPLE RAIN, there would never have been a SOTT.

I just feel sorry 4 "Around The World In A Day" and "Parade" being sandwiched inbetween those 2 colossal albums.

Thats a tough one. Purple Rain is awesome but he'd matured a little in SOTT. I like SOTT though cos that was the album (& tour) that got me into Prince

SOTT

I understand the importance of Purple Rain, and I love the movie, and the rockier edge, but SOTT just represents Prince at his absolute best, imo.

Of the two, Purple Rain. 1999 is my favorite.

As much as I love 'Purple Rain',my only complaint is it just doesn't have enough hardcore funk on it.It's mainly a rock/pop album.Nothing wrong with that, but I appreciate the diversity of 'SOTT' much more.

Not enough hard core funk? There is no hard core funk on it.

Since we don't have to choose I'm glad to have them both. But forced to choose it's PR for me.

what the heck is hard core funk any way?
u all tellin' me "Computer Blue" (especially the unreleased extended version, a bit of which The Revolution rehearses in the film) ain't funky? Don't confuse Springsteen's brand of rock, wth P's 'funky' rock, but either way, all respect 2 SOTT, my 3rd fave after PURPLE RAIN and 1999.

p.s. B4 THE BEATLES, there was a guy called ELVIS.
