The artist may be more of a factor than the art. When you treat your fans, your customers, or your colleagues with respect and some degree of gratitude, they respond in kind.

Prince could fill the same arenas as Springsteen with his current output, if only he'd lose the religious cult drivel and hire a qualified PR firm to "communicate" with his fanbase. I doubt Springsteen has to micromanage his website, and the results are obvious:

First Off I Can't Stand Springsteen. Never Did,Never Will. Secondly Prince and him are so Different and Prince doesn't Have to sell out Stadiums and be MIDDLE AMERICA. I for one am GLAD he is More UNDERGROUND CULTISH. You Either Love Prince or you Don't! I like it that way and PRINCE I Believe Always Wanted it this Way. He is Not IMPRESSED by the SPOTLIGHT although he is Quite DESERVING of It and all the AWARDs he couldn't Really Care Much. I think it's just that he is so Freaking Cool,listen People just don't Understand or Know him. True Muffy wants her Man to be more Out There and more with the Playboy thing but Prince just Really Need or Want that Scene Anymore. But well,things have Changed Prince so Now it being 2003 it's not 83,93 and you See what is POPULAR with the Teens and FOLKS. THE Stickers on the Cds and the Language and well just the whole Vibe is HEAVY. Prince Knows and he is Still doing it his Way like way back and being Different. A True Fan will Get this about him and his Work. Each Cd Does NOT have to be Grand ,it does not have to be a Million Seller. It is where Prince is Dwelling Now and Right now it's Peaceful and Calm. I would Say he's Happy,Serene and Comfortable and it Shows in the Peace that is Represented in N.E.W.S.

Most people (no matter how cool they are) don't like Prince, and the reason is because they simply don't understand that kind of music,

I've never been a Springsteen fan - his music doesn't move me in the least - but he has managed to cultivate a loyal fan base, not alienate them. And at this advanced stage in his career, he rolled through California, selling out stadium venues like it was 1984. I watched the recent show here in SF, and it wasn't the music that moved me - it was the 30,000 supporters that showed up to hear Springsteen play (not preach).

It diminishes my enjoyment of masterful releases like TRC, and it completely alienates countless others who might otherwise want to listen to the music. And that's one of the main reasons he's selling out Kodak Theater (I was there) - not Dodger Stadium.

And there is no denying it, having a website that gives your supporters real information and access to you says a lot about how you feel about them. Bruce can sell out arenas like this cuz he doesn't disappoint his fans the way Prince does. Now, Bruce is nowhere near as talented as Prince is, but he knows how to keep the fans happy, which is a skill Prince lacks. Prince just does whatever he wants to do whatever he wants, and fuck everyone else. That's great for him, but that's why he's practically dead to the world now.

The nature of art is to keep moving in whatever direction your inspiration takes you. You can't always give the fans what they want and be true to your art at the same time. Only at those special moments is it possible to do both. Those are the moments we live for-- i.e. the Purple Rain era. Having said that, yeah I wish Prince could be more like the Boss and atleast appear to be down with what the rest of us care about and quit with the weird behavior but we can't have it both ways.

Springsteen has a completely different agenda, and speaks to completely different people.

How many 'blue collars', as they say, would you see at a Prince show? Not as many as you'd see at a pro-US Boss show.

Not that I have anything against the boss, but it's all contextual.
