add N.E.W.S. & Rave to the list.Kind of odd, one's an all out attempt to be commercial and the other is the complete opposite, yet both godawful. 'Artisic integrity' counts for nothing when you've painted a turd.

the only two albums I count as reckless shite:

Emancipation
NPS

which I count as being one 'phase' in his career, so it's not that bad...

Rave has good stuff, The Vault is GREAT, and Chaos & Disorder is good as well imho.

Worst albums:
1. Emancipation
2. Rave
3. Xpectation

I like about half of the NPS album. The album might not have the best written songs, but there's some solid grooves on it.

NPS ISN'T a Prince album.

It's an NPG album.

I like Freaks though.

Only tracks on there that I really like is "Come On" (that there Chaka Khan sung chorus line is quite catchy, I think) and "Wasted Kisses" (and that's not even really part of the album).

New Power Soul is a GREAT funky album.
There are some killer songs on it...
I don't understand why people discredit it so much.
There must be a 'bandwagon' effect goin' on...
Give it another listen...Prince albums grow on ya.

1. NewPower Soul- excellent cut

2. Mad Sex- yet another

3. Until U're In My Arms Again- a gem

4. When U Love Somebody- could be the best cut on NPS

5. Shoo-Bed-Ooh- don't like the intro, but the chorus is cool.

6. Push It Up- Party anthem

7. Freaks On This Side- Push It Up's baby brother

8. Come On- come on, who doesn't love this jam? head bopper

9. The One- another gem

10. eye Like Funky Music- killer horns

* On top of that, you also get Wasted Kisses- an org fav

This has turned into one of my favorite Prince CD's...
YEAH, I SAID IT.

I think that tracks like "Newpower Soul", "Push It Up", "Freaks On This Side" and "eye Like Funky Music" are jams that don't really go anywhere - certainly the lyrics contain nothing new or meaningful.
Tracks like "Mad Sex", "Until U're In My Arms Again", "When U Love Somebody" and "The One" are just the usual "addressing my latest love" songs, and it is evident that Mayte did not inspire the same (musical) passion in Prince that some of his earlier girlfriends (say Susannah) did, and lyrically there has been no maturing/growth in Prince's rather malechauvanistic views since, say, Susannah.
"Shoo-Bed-Ooh" is so instantly forgettable that the melody does not even spring to my mind when I read the song title - something Prince titles used to make do.
The first time I heard this album, I was like bored waiting for something new and original to come along. This album is just treading water.
I'm not saying that it is a bad album, just that it makes me feel bored - which is certainly not the feeling Prince albums or even Prince Act albums USED to inspire.

I certainly listened to it quite a few times, but it failed to grow on me. Prince albums used to stay on my player for long periods of time. This one lasted about a couple of weeks - which is still more than TRC did, so...

My problem with the album is that Prince himself spoiled me with albums that lasted for months and months - so with this album he failed to deliver something that lived up to standards which he himself had set. So yeah, I was VERY disappointed with Newpower Soul.

exactly. Prince has spoiled us and unfortunately we expected each time to be taken somewhere new with his music and jeez he can't do that with each and every release. no one can. especially with other influences in music coming into the equation when we listen to other music. Prince is just one part of our listening "pie". we do like other music.
i was disappointed with that album tho.

The thing is - if he isn't producing as much high standard quality music at as fast a pace as he used to, he should take longer between albums. If he had waited just three years after Emancipation before releasing another album, we could have had the best tracks off of The Truth, Newpowersoul and Rave Un2 The joy Fantastic making up an album. Then we'd have had an album with good, solid, strong tracks rather than three albums of filler material.
Also, such an album could conceivable have been more succesful and earned Prince more money, and as he himself has expressed earning money is very important to him. But apparently he does not have a good business sense to go with his wish - that's kinda like ambition without talent (or Carmen Electra and Mayte evillol).

In my opinion, his poorest album is Grafitti Bridge. I haven't pulled that out in over a year I'm sure.

Mediocre albums include:
For You
Prince
Batman
Diamonds and Pearls
Emancipation
C & D
NPS
The Vault

The rest I reckon are good, and there are real gems I can pull from all of the albums I mentioned.

The Truth was a theme album in that it was all acoustic. IMO, it is a gem and shouldn't be fucked with or integrated with any other disks.

"Prince"...medicore??? Wow. The same album with "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Bambi" and "Sexy Dancer"? The softer R&B songs are good but not great, yes but those 3 classics alone make it one of my favorites.

It certainly isn't without a sort of pop charm, but it's not exciting at all. I do enjoy it in my player every now and then.

"NPSoul" has a few great songs on it - "Come On", "Wasted Kisses" and "The One" - which easily outclass the best three on "Rave Un2", "Chaos & Disorder" and "Exodus". I'd file "NPSoul" along with "Goldnigga" as albums made to seem better than they actually are by a few truly classic songs.

If you want a stinker of a Prince album, check out "SNOOZE". Musical manure.

"GB" is another patchy album made to seem so much better by some outstanding songs - "Joy in Repetition", "We Can Funk" and "Question of U".
