Aladdin DVD - another short review

Today I have received my Aladdin DVD from Amazon Germany. After so much has been heard and written, here are my 2 cents.

Some positive things about the DVD:

- the DVD itself. I know, it’s stupid but 1 Prince DVD is better than no Prince DVD. The band is really great and Prince is as fascinating as he has always been.

- the picture quality. Yes, it’s not that bad as I would have expected after everything I’ve read here. Maybe it’s because this is the European PAL version.

Some negative things about the DVD:

- the sound. It’s really annoying. The level control forces you to turn the volume up and down very often. Prince’s voice is too loud, the band sound is mastered unbelieveable amateurish. This is an insult to DVD sound technology. It's ridiculuos that the sound of the NPGMC add is better than the concert.

- the stills. For instance, the whole concert feeling of Gotta Broken Heart Again is ruined. They should have put the photos and stills on a bonus track.

- no complete concert. This has been said very often but it’s still true and it's the most annoying in my opinion. This DVD simply does not reproduce the great feeling we all got last year when watching the shows. Prince should have put the whole concert from start to beginning on DVD and everything else would be o.k.

All in all, this DVD is not bad. You can argue about the camera work but I really like large parts of the shown footage. But if you think of what would have been possible, the whole DVD is simply a missed chance.

the picture quality is not that good cause its recorded on Video and not on film. Video is cheaper then using real film. And we all know that the man is kinda cheap smile He loves 2 safe money.
There is summin with volume yes...but i really like the Dvd. I love Whole lotta love/family name...What a band!!!

i dig the clip of TheWork from MSN.
i love how it is raw & amateurish... not like Rave, where it is a great show & package... but is very glossy & choppy.

i like my porn the same way.
all those glossy pics & made-up models = rolleyes

just get raw & dirty with the funk dammit! headbang

Strange - the sound on mine is different (and I'm in Europe too) On my copy Prince's vocals are not loud enough - it is the keyboards that forrce me to turn the volume down now and again. Apart from that though it is the best live prince I have seen since '88 (yes, I did go to the other tours but they were always a little dissapointing after 86 - 88). This however, I just love. Every song. But especially Gotta Broken Heart (nothing ruined for me there).

Some friends of mine who are not P fans but who had a grudging respect for him caught Rave live on TV a couple of years ago and I was so embarassed (yes they did thing it was shit - as do I). But the new DVD gave me a feeling of pride in him that I haven't felt for a looong time.

I've been waiting for years for him to give up being a pop star and do exactly this, Damm fine.
