Does anyone know Prince's lyrical part on Vanity 6's 'If a girl answers don't hang up? I need to know what he's singing!
Great tune BTW. | |

This song rocks!
This is one (of many) songs that clearly show Prince's rapping style / skills early on. Alot thought "dead on it" was one of his first attempts, or even when Tony M came on the scene, but NO! Go listen to the 1999 cd, Prince raps all over it! Xperience the Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com/

Wrong. where's the proof? The Time backed Vanity 6 . . . music is its own reward - Sting

The time backed up Vanity 6 in concert, but not in the Studio.
Sure, the album credits say its the Time, but so do all the time albums, and prince did all the music on them. The give away is that its a Jamie Starr production. In "If a Girl answers" Prince is simply doing his alter ego "voice" style that isn't a million miles from when Morris says things like "oh Lawd!". You can also hear prince use it on Tricky, Vibrator and Cloreen Baconskin. I thought it was Morris, when I first heard it. So much, it made it on a Time Greatest Hits tape I used to play all the time. Then it dawned on me, it was actually Prince. Sames goes for Tricky (Except the intro lines, which ARE Morris). . Morris worked hard to make his voice sound like Prince or vice verse - Prince worked hard to make Morris sound like him - hence Morris' frustration - he wanted to be his own man! and the Time did record as well as perform. the following came from an internet search . . . Vanity 6 Female funk group featuring Brenda, Susan and Vanity. Soon afterwards Vanity departed the group to pursue a solo singing career and acting career, and the band reformed as Apollonia 6, adding Apollonia Katera. For more recordings see Apollonia 6 and R&B singer Vanity. 1982 – Drive Me Wild 1982 – If A Girl Answers (Don’t Hang Up) (Recorded with Morris Day) 1982 – Nasty Girl music is its own reward - Sting
