Maybe Prince was pissed because D'Angelo got away with being buck naked in a video. All those times Prince wanted 2 do that... lol

falloff

I don't think so, but a lot of people said that one of his songs from Rave (can't think of it now) mentions something about him.

The positive Prince comments regarding D (Get Yo Groove On and Undisputed) became negative (Daisy Chain and Undisputed remix) after the comments written by Saul Williams (Wrongly liunked to D by some) in the Voodoo album's liner notes.

D'Angelo sucks anyway!! Liked his first album a lot for like two months. God I'll be glad when all these neo-soul, pseudosophisicated, wannabe's get real...or just go away. Riding the jocks of all the original and PURE soul artists of the past can only conjure nostalgia and reminds me of how truly God-awful the mainstream is!!

The Possessed book says that the Prince meeting with Ahmir ?uestlove & D'Angelo was tense. He was telling them about how will they get fucked up by their labels at the end. When they jammed, he played new non-heard of stuff that made the poor brothas frustrated and he was telling Ahmir 2 play his drums "right".

When D'Angelo left the building, he turned around 2 Ahmir an said "Why do I feel like needing 2 take a shower".

Nobody knoes really what happend! I heard that D'Angelo refused 2 play in the 1st Celep party which made Prince very hyped about this.

I've heard the style called both (corn or cane sugar rows) and think P said "cane" on this track, one of the two anyway. Plays a clip of the guy (Mr Hayes I think) having his hair braided smoking weed.

As much as I respect D'Angelo, he's nowhere near the talent P is. That being said, why would P go out of his way to dis someone who isn't really a peer in the "big pic"?

He has a way of alienating folk who revere him. Why, I don't know.

Anxiety

I know ?uestlove still has a lot of love for Prince - his interview in the new issue of The Believer magazine namechecks Prince quite a bit, including a part where he refers to P as "the youngest Yoda" in R&B music ("Yoda" meaning classic influential masters). He also talked a lot about D'Angelo, and said that D' regretted making the "Untitled" video, and that he plans on gaining a lot of weight and getting a gut so that when he tours next, women will stop screaming for him to "take it off". Apparently, he has like three or four tracks laid down for a new album.

d'angelo and amhir have nothing but love for prince.

i've read many interviews where d talks about his performance with prince with nothing but respect.

like essence said, it were the 'voodoo' linernotes that didn't do well with prince.

d'angelo and ahmir just feel like prince fell off in the 90's (ahmir says for him it was with 'come').

they've said they'd love to hear prince do what he did in the 80's--musically that is.

people saying d'angelo sucks--that's cool. i think he's a great artist though.

i get tired of all these neo-soul cats too nowadays. but they don't spoil the love i got for d's music.

cause you got to admit, it's quality shit. he's the best you've got at this moment.

D'angelo & Ahmir are average talents at best. But they always name drop people as if they are in the same league. D'Angelo is actually garbage in my opinion...the man doesn't enunciate. And I mean figuratively and literally...he is a big music fan who wants to be considered in the same class as Prince, Stevie, Hendrix, Miles but he isn't special. And literally the guy overdubs his voice so poorly (unlike Prince) that u can;t make out the lyrics or melody.

I was glad to hear that Prince worked them at that jam session, & was giving them career advice...they walked away feeling "dirty". They suck, they should feel dirty-they had no business sitting in with him anyway.

And Ahmir is a typical drummer: pist he can't be the front man. Typical-doesn't have the face, sense of melody, or the brains for. Constantly trying to justify & prove his musicianship...

2 sense

Ahmir is an alright drummer. but he's an excellent producer.

he comes up with great music. you got to give him that.

about d'angelo--nobody bitched when 'brown sugar' dropped.

it's a great album. it set off that whole neo-soul movement.

with 'voodoo' d imo tried to seperate himself from that movement.

it left a lot of people disappointed. others loved it though.

i'm one of them. and i don't understand people that say d and ahmir are overrated.

they both create true art imo. and they stay true to their art.

you don't see that too often nowadays.

I really liked Brown Sugar - the song and was pleasantly surprised a few other songs on the first disc. I liked it a lot proabably b/c it sounded so Princish. Voodoo never did much for me. Looking back, there was so much hype - d'angelo and his gang got waaay too caught up in it. What nerve saying what they said about the man on only his 2nd lp. Please.

Both d'angelo and questlovve should be ashamed of those comments... who are they? Will they ever be able to cover more than a miniscule part of Prince's musical rainbow?

It's Terence Trent D'arby all over again-- without the singing ability, but with a more marketable image.

I bought "voodoo", but found it to be an overdub nightmare w/inaudible vocals. I can't remember a single melody off that disk. i usually end up buying one disk a year because of the hype machine- "voodoo" was that disk. I think he's a great soul key player, but I don't think he has any SONGWRITING ability. I enjoyed 'Brown Sugar', but everything else I've heard sounds like too much time spent noodling in the studio.

BLAH!

I got 2 words 4 ya "James Poyser" this the REAL tight producer. I think that Ahmir is damn lucky 2 share the co-production credit with James, he was the "ghostworker" with all the ideas and the inputs.

Ahmir happens 2 be in front of the camera ALWAYS(Unlike poor ol' James).

I just love the way folks attack artist that don't stay in the public's eye all the time. I would bet every instrument I own that if D was dropping an album next month the hype would be outrageous. Prince put out a box set and rainbow children, besides Prince worshippers, no one cared. It's not that the stuff released wasn't great, (I love everything so far) But P plays by his own rules. No single, no video, little press release.

Don't bash a great musician/artist like D'Angelo because the industry has so many copies of his style. He is probably the one artist that when he releases an album 50 different atrist get a contract just for trying to sound or be like him. Who was the last artist that dressed and acting like Prince to get signed???

I draw a blank too.

Please explain how a talented, skilled drummer like Amir suck? Name me some drummers that are better!! (Besides John B.)
