i really like NEWS, liked it when i first heard it and like it even more now! id love to see a recording session of it, the fact they improvised it astounds me! presumably prince was motioning saying lets play this improv riff four or five times and thats how they play in sync and shit, cos it says direction by prince

personally i feel its a huge triumph. and could cap off his jazz era quite nicely, at least the instrumental stuff

ps if anyone hasnt got news yet its back on at cdwow for 9quid inc 2 day free delivery!

However, I've been putting the CD on a lot in the background whilst I've been doing other things (washing-up, playing video games, having sex, etc. etc.) and I have to say that it's growing on me big time.

And i thought it wasn't a sex-album! Can't have sex on Prince, cuz it's always taking my attention.
Love you till you're dead

Listening to NEWS is like meeting a new person about whom I've heard good and bad things. Unless I put aside all those comments, I won't get to know that person for who he is. So, I decided to give NEWS one more chance. Right now, I am listening to it with no expectations. I am starting to appreciate and feel the beauty of it all. NEWS is a challenge different from TRC and ONA. On those, I had to stop thinking whether the JW religion is good or bad. Afterall, I bought those CDs knowing that Prince is a JW. At some point, I hesitated between moving on or adapting to the change and continue to be a fan. I chose the latter option. I am looking forward to next challenging album. No, the magic hasn't disappeared, it is there to be discovered with an open mind.

I've been listening it for four days in a row and I dislike it. Yesterday I felt good about it, but today having compared it to "acid jazz remixes" and "Jazz:the most relaxing music in the world", I changed my mind. These two CDs are truly relaxing and soothing even though they don't have that extra little something that previous Prince albums have. Threre are two things that annoy me about NEWS:
1. Each track begins and ends with slow and barely audible instrumentation.
2. Some instruments don't play longer than 3 secs.
I guess I was expecting to feel that high that some people have been reporting. The magic is gone.

Those aren't jazz albums, lazybones. Go and buy a John Coltrane or Miles Davis "album", not some TV-advertised compilation for dummies.

By the way, I think NEWS is a good album. It's interesting.

Who you calling lazybones, fauxnewbie? Could you elaborate your point further? Are those "TV compilations" the equivalent of MTV's TRL? What makes Miles Davis' and John Coltrane's music real jazz?

It's Good and it's Different for Prince. It's Not Meant to be Monumental. It's a Good piece of Music from a Great Musician.

WOah, DUDE! LOOK up "REAL JAZZ" in a dictionary and you will see those two musicians. However, I must say that there IS some "real jazz" being played within NEWS, too...it's just being played by a pop artist is all, so some people have a problem accepting it as authentic. But listen to the sounds...does it feel like jazz? I think so, in parts. But moreso, "jazz-fusion".

Ah, yet another Prince fanatic who wants to be on my shit list. Well like I've said before, I think what's really sad is the way you feel you have to defend Prince when someone puts him down. You think he'd defend you in an argument, fuck no. This is a forum for everyone, and if I choose to express my opinions, then I'm gonna do it. I don't give a fuck if you don't like it.

It's OK, but I don't look to an artist like Prince for "OK".

It's a bit better thatn Xpectation.

In short, it aint "Days of Wild" and it aint why I came to the party.

Pardon me, MrDespues. I am new to jazz and I don't think that makes me a "lazybones"or a dummy. I didn't mean to offend you or Fauxnewbie. Again, I reiterate my question: What is the difference between the "TV compilations" and Miles Davis and John Coltrane?

It is a lovely appetizer but hardly a full meal. He hasn't dished up a heaping meal that I could keep down for a little while. TRC was pretty good, but truth be told, he hasn't made me dance for a long time.
The real question is how many fusion jazz albums do you own? Prince does several different types of music. If you are not into all of them, you wont appreciate all of his work. Prince appeals to the pop/rock audience which - for the most part - has not knowledge or appreciation for jazz in any form. This album is not for the fan who is longing for the next Prince and the Revolution (which has been gone damn near 20 years so get over it). This is easily the best group of musicians that Prince has ever surrounded himself with and also his most prolific work ever. That is not going to translate to universal popularity. In fact, it guarantees the opposite.
Lamont, I do not want a Revolution re-union just a return to non-pretentious music that ppl can enjoy &/or dance to. It is not his most prolific work ever, in a world wide poll you would find your statement being questioned big time.
I love music, it plays such a massive part in my life & I am open-minded enough to appreciate all kinds of music even if it is not my bag but with N.E.W.S. & the new DVD you have to doubt the path that Prince is taking, especially when you think that we will probably never have an official release of 'HIGH', it makes no sense!

I wouldn't lump High in with NPS and Rave. IMO it was more inspired. I'd really like it on CD to hear it in its full glory... fingers crossed this happens, along with Xpectation...

And NEWS is just awesome. Absolutely bloody awesome. Respect to the man for continuing to challenge himself.
