The band he has now is great, but anyone of them could be replaced and the music would sound the same. No, they wouldn't. Not just any drummer could replace Blackwell and not skip a beat, no pun intended. Blackwell is not all that. ?uestlove could replace him tonight and not skip a beat, no pun intended either. NO BAND sounded like the Revolution, and let's see if any of this new band makes the cover of Rolling Stone.
Your unrelenting enthusiasm, to put it mildly, for the Revolution has just hit a gigantic speed bump. If you judge a band's greatness or validation by Rolling Stone magazine, especially today's Rolling Stone, you hold it in much higher regard than it deserves. True, Rolling Stone is shit now, but at the time it wasn't. So that actually says more because not just ANYONE made the cover back then.

I suppose it depends on what you expect from a 'band'. The problem is with an artist like Prince, any 'band' discussion is rendered moot in light of what he's capable of from a musicianship standpoint.
However, all things considered, for me it comes down to the tunes. Give me a great studio album over a great live performance any day of the week. I don't think it can be questioned that the Revolution had more creative input, as far as writing was concerned, than any band he's ever had. Well, let's be blunt: They had more influence on the music that mattered. As far as musical chops goes, almost any post-Revolution band can be pointed to as superior than it's predecessor. But from where I sit, Prince was at his 'musical' best when he had the Revolution behind him. Specifically with the influence of Wendy and Lisa on his songwriting and musical growth. After all, no one's clamoring for a '93 NPG reunion, now are they?

The band that really rules is the first one:
Dez Andre Bobby Fink Lisa When Brown Mark replaced Andre, the band was still the coolest. When Wendy replaced Dez ... that's a little disaster. The NPG wanckers... that's when I lost interest. Maybe they're good musicians (technically), but the music stinks! Maybe if you hooked in after 1986, than I can understand you like the NPG. But for me they ruined it all.

No way! Hey I love Wendy & Lisa and the rest of the Revolution. Their studio work is great and they brought out creativity that Prince didn't even knew he had in him. However for pure musicianship? I think his current line-up is the best band he has ever had, then followed closely by the SOTTs/Lovesexy band.
