My guesses:

because he wants the world to appreciate him as a musician
because he doesn't feel like singing
because he feels like playing instrumentals
because he's sick of the criticism of TRC lyrics
because he doesn't have to sing

Your guesses are as good as mine.

Actually, those of us who've followed Prince's career since the beginning are used to his non-musical silence.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Hey don't put it past Prince 2 put out an acapella album as a direct contradiction 2 all this instrumental stuff we've been hearing. U just never know with him.

Exactly! However, I have 2 say I hope prince doesnt discontinue his interaction with his audiences. It's always been so much fun. His instrumentals R indeed awesome in & of themselves of course, but giving up on singing, with his voice as gorgeous as it is would B totally wasting a huge talent of his that we all have loved 4 years. It's a nice change & we all know prince likes 2 throw people off as 2 what he'll do next, so this probably is just a "new" diversion 4 him. However, he enjoys playing his instruments immensely, and this gives all a chance 2 see just how talented a musician he is with JUST the instruments! Thats cool!
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses

because NEWS is all instrumental.
he doesnt even have the courtesy to even acknowledge his fans with a simple "thank you".
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

OK, does that explain his speechless L.A. performance recently. Now I see that he's truly gone off the deep end. But so did Thelonius Monk after his decline in sales and popularity.

What silence? Perhaps too much is being made out of this. It's not really so strange, and does it really have to have some kind of deeper meaning underlying it?

Perhaps he just happens to have made quite a bit of instrumental stuff recently and isn't singing quite as much.

Retro-funk with vocals sure sounds good though. I won't be disappointed to hear his voice again, BUT, I'm not upset that he has been giving us interesting and funky instrumental music recently.
