POLL : PRINCE'S SILENCE

Ok, Prince's isn't technically "silent" since he's playing his intruments, but he's not singing and he has not made any public statement in quite some time. His audience is getting a bit frustrated, as evidenced by the crowd's clamoring for vocals at his recent B.B. King House of Blues performance.

In an effort to understand his decision to be wordless for the last year or so, I have fashioned a questionaire based on the best methodology available. Please let us know what you think.

Prince has been "silent" (wordless) for the last couple of months because...

a) he's taken a vow of silence to atone for his past sins;
b) he came across TRC's lyrics late one night and has not spoken a word since.
c) the last time he had a pregnant wife, he released his wordiest album only to be brutally confronted by the death of his child AND the need to honor his Emancipation contract, so this time he's not writing lyrics.
d) he doesn't have anything to say anymore.
e) it's all a ploy to reclaim his enigmatic persona after a couple of years of relative media-friendliness.
f) his last lyrics were so radical even Larry balked at the prospect of releasing them.
g) he popped a vocal chord.
h) he just wants to frustrate us.
i) he wants his instrumental music to be taken seriously.
j) he has nothing nice to say so he,s saying nothing.
k) ...?

I think it's a combination of both

e) it's all a ploy to reclaim his enigmatic persona after
a couple of years of relative media-friendliness.

and

i) he wants his instrumental music to be taken seriously.

PS: I don't mean to sound like a horse's ass, but I havent
been on here that much lately, so is Mani preggers or what

He really hasn't been "silent" what about the song "reflection" that was available for listening at NPGMC? And the DJ played a new song during the aftershow that was described as retro funk w/ vocals.Who knows these songs maybe released on a future album.keeping my fingers crossed...

He felt the need to cuss again, so he asked Larry to wash his mouth out with soap. Unfortunately, being a vegan, he heals slower than most people. Eventually, he'll be OK.

I think that's true (agreeing with Teller...at least this is the Prince music message board and not Politics). Everyone said "Loved the music but hate the lyrics". Now suffer. It also could be that he is working on some great pop songs with lryics and just making us wait for them. I don't think that he will release another instrumental album in 2004 (unless it's "Xceptation" or whatever) but will wow us with a really good "pop" album.

Nah, Pamolive is too gentle. To make sure, Larry used "Lava" or maybe some of his granny's home-made lye soap.

I think (b) in a way. "The Rainbow Children" was so message-oriented that many people couldn't swallow it. I think the silence is a response to the harsh criticism for the lyrical content.

My guesses:

because he wants the world to appreciate him as a musician
because he doesn't feel like singing
because he feels like playing instrumentals
because he's sick of the criticism of TRC lyrics
because he doesn't have to sing
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Probably true. Didn't he slowly back off from TRC comtent (and preaching) and add more "hits" as the 2002 tour made its way through Europe?

Still, I thought with Avalance and Xenophobia, we'd get some more overt political songs out of P. I'm just holding on till this religious phase passes. (Hopefully, P will keep moving like he always has. I remember that it took Dylan 3 albums and several years to drop the messianic material and go back to what he did best.)

I was there.
Seven feet away from the stage.
In a very small room full of about 200 people. At least on the floor level.
NO ONE was clamoring for vocals.
NO ONE.
If someone said 'sing' it was one tiny and overheated chick who could barely be heard over the absolutely cooking performance of Prince and his band. I never heard it and my suspicion is that the writer from Rolling Stone decided to sensationalize his little story by making a bigger deal out of the fact that it was an all instrumental performance. I repeat: there was no outcry from frustrated fans. We were all pretty much in the same headspace - totally stunned that this was even happening!

I was at the LA performance and the crowd was not chanting for him to sing. I heard several people comment on him not singing but there was not a collective clamoring for him to sing.

It doesn't bother me to not hear his voice, as long as it's not a permanent thing! smile
