The public might be aware of of certain songs, but those are really the only ones that have made an impact.

The Beautiful Ones made an impact. That song structure - starting slow and building to a crescendo - has been used by many an artist since in popular music.

"Why Go?" by Faithless/Boy George immediately springs to mind, but there have been other songs where I've thought - that's just like "The Beautiful Ones"!

Making an impact on the public and making an impact on popular music isn't always one and the same.

There are songs that go beyond the charts that have made an impact on popular music. Prince happens to be a huge influence on the so-called "Neo Soul" contingent, therefore you can find many different artists who bear his stamp. People outside of the "Neo Soul" movement such as Beck and the Neptunes also cop to an obvious Prince influence. These folks weren't just listening to hit singles by Prince, they were listening to Prince's overall themes, idiosyncrasies and studying his aesthetics.

So this goes far beyond just some of his hits on the pop charts.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
