Recent(ish) [kind of] Prince tribute album

Heard it yet folks? It's called 'If I Was Prince' and is out on Rex's Records (I think they're part of the Beggars group).

It's all covers by underground acts that defy catagorisation and pidgeonholing. You can tell they all love the little fella and there's some really interesting reworkings.

I'll warn you, if your tastes are strictly mainstream then this ain't for you but I really like it. Nice packaging, there's a little booklet where all the folk involve say what they'd do if they were Prince.

Tracklisting:-

1. 7 hurtz with peaches + bitch lap lap - 'Sexy Dancer'
2. fort lauderdale - 'Annie Christian'
3. op:l bastards - 'If I Was Your Girlfriend'
4. capitol k - 'Dance On'
5. simian - 'Under The Cherry Moon'
6. broadway project with jeb loy nichols - 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker'
7. hefner - 'Controversy' *
8. bronze age fox - 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World'
9. blue states - 'Alphabet Street'
10. misty dixon - 'The Beautiful Ones'

The tracklisting gets 8 & 9 the wrong way round, but there's an insert pointing this out.

*Confusingly, there are (or were) 2 bands in the UK called Hefner. One was an indie band who sang about heartbreak and the other on a downbeat, jazzy tip. This is by the latter.

Has it? Doh! I looked at the Rex website and it was everywhere, those guys really need to do an update! My fave is probably 'Under The Cherry Moon' or 'If I was Your Girlfriend'. Anyway, I'd better go edit my original post so I don't look so silly (damn, gave myself away!)

It's not that old and it's not that great...I only keep my copy for the Peaches song. Who knows, maybe one day some of the other tracks will jump out at me...I really like Simian, but their cover on here leaves me pretty cold.

We're goin' ta Prince's house tonight, we're goin' ta Prince's house tonight...

I played that Peaches and Lap Lap Sexy Dancer driving to Paisley for the first time. Aw, yeah.

Would he be able to handle them? I think even Prince wouldn't know what hit him!
