Small Club instrumental = NEWS '88

Listen to the instrumental opening from the Aug. 18, 1988 show and then play NEWS - the instrumental could easily be a part of the set. Almost 14 minutes, also.

I'm sure there are people who don't like NEWS, but love this instrumental just because it's part of this legendary show. But listen, and you'll hear that Prince really hasn't changed in essence in the last 15 years - he's always been trying experimental instrumental music - now we just hear more of it.

If you listen closely enough this instrumental is a precursor to "The Max."

The Max and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic share the same lead line. Both had been recorded before this show, so this instrumental 'quoted' both of them. DMSR from this show quotes America, and People Without quotes Six, among other similar quotes in the show...

That first 1988 instrumental also contains a fair portion of the 12" of America.

Listen , It's there.
Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

When I listen to the intro of East, I anticipate the first main keyboards from People Without.

Prince has always played instrumentals and jazzy type grooves.ONA show is not far removed from the Parade era. It's just that now,he seems less concerned with maintaining the pop sensibility and trying to concentrate more on being "authentic".He seesm to take this more seriously. It probably has a lot to do with age and you can't expect him to play DMSR in black thongs like he did in '83.

He is trying to bridge his past to his future and have some dignity and still show that he is doin' "the work" and can still blow everybody else away in any musical style. He is "elvisnatra".Elvisnatra can kick some a and croon.Prince is the Micahel Vick of music. He will incorporate many sensibilities into one and make it accessible to those who want a trip.

fact is that the jams on the NEWS album are not as trong as those performed in aftershows as Rotterdam or Paris this year. My 2 cents
cheers
