Am I the only one who ain't diggin' Jill Jones ?

I never could really get in2 Jill Jones. I mean I know alot of fans say that, this is Prince best music effort besides his own, but besides mia bocca, I don't really like this album, I can stand 2 listen 2 her voice shake. Susannah's voice was more relaxing, but Jill Jones, well, she just can't sing (2 me) her voice is not appealing whatsoever . I didn't like her version of baby you're a trip in a half, or her version 2 G- Spot, I don't know if it was, maybe it was because I heard Prince version first and was digging it , but when I heard the Jill Jones lp, I was like "Oh no , you gots 2 go" lol.

Her voice took me about 15 years to get into, but now I dig her a ton. I hear where you're coming from, though. It's kinda...theatrical, maybe? Kinda silly sounding, but hey, it was the 80's.

The thing is - her album is mostly made up of Prince tracks that got left over and then she got 'em instead. It would have been different if the songs were more tailored to her, I think. As it is, I'd rather hear Prince's original versions.

I admit to kinda liking the album, but I think her best tracks are the B-sides "77 Bleecker St." and "Baby Cries (Ay Yah)". And those I think she wrote herself, although I'm sure Prince is playing on them. But the lyrics to "Baby Cries (Ay Yah)" are obviously directed at Prince himself.

As for "77 Bleecker St."... Well, I too have this thing for guys with winter faces... But that's another story shhh

I love the album but it seems a bit uneven.

It has some of my favourite Prince tracks on - Mia Bocca, All Day All Night, For Love.

With You is a bit too sappy really, sounds like it belongs on a Golden Oldies radio show.

Baby You're A Trip rubs me up the wrong way, in the same way Slow Love does.

G-Spot I find a bit too monotonous.

I think one or two song changes and it would have been just a perfect album.

I've always had a real special place in my heart for Mia Bocca, I think it may just be my favourite Prince song - it's kinda everything I like about his music.

I was listening to it today and I realised how it sounds like something from 1999, like Automatic - coming from that era, you can hear that in the song. I would love to hear the original and contrast it with the released reworked one from later 1985/6 with the strings and horns - This song ties quite well the 1999 era to the later Parade era in a way I hadn't thought about before.

Anxiety

Yeah, her voice isn't all that but she gets points for effort, not to mention it's some of the most inspired protege material Prince ever trundled out...but then, he was on a roll at the time.

Who said that Jill's project was the best thing Prince did outside of his own projects?

Don't get me wrong, i dug the album a lot. Hard not to with the Revolution banging away on most of the tracks. Yeah Jill's not an amazing singer. But she's WAY better than Apollonia or Vanity.

And i think that "Violet Blue" is an amazing song...

the album is ok. The video for the unreleased BOOM BOOM is freakin' hot. I've popped off a few rounds watching that one. Bottom line... I'd do her. Was that the question?

I'd say she's a pretty decent singer, I agree that susannah was better. Jill sqeaked/squealed too damn much (hmm...wonder where she got that from), but other than that she was okay.
Her album was definitely one of Paisley Park's better moments, but not the best, IMHO.

The thing is,unlike most of Prince's female proteges,Jill Jones can actually sing. Her voice is undeniably strong and powerful. However,on her debut album, she's not singing very impressively. She spends much of the record yelling, yelping and shouting. And when she's not doing that, she's trying to imitate Prince (listen to "For Love").On the frantic "All Day,All Night",she sounds like she's going out of her mind...lol...Her vocals needed more restraint.Or maybe she just needed songs that were tailor-made for her voice. Her album consists of old Prince-written tracks that could have easily been recorded by any of Prince's female proteges.

That's not to say the album isn't good. It's filled with several gems."My Man" is a sublime pop song that really should have been the first single. And who can resist the beautiful "Violet Blue"? But,in the end,Jill's album seems like a missed opportunity.

Harlepolis

Like someone said earlier, it woulda been betta if she made at least 30% of that LP without the help and the control of Prince.

These songs aren't fit 4 her IMO, she has that Teena Marie influence in her voice. She should've gotten mo' into RnB and what-not.

I agree. It would have been better for Jill to have used maybe two Prince songs, and songs from other songwriters/producers.That way,she would have came up with a more diverse album that doesn't sound so "Princely".
