My favorite 5 are probably:

Dirty Mind
1999
Purple Rain
Parade
SOTT

But in truth, Prince didn't put a foot wrong from 1980 to 1988. All albums released during this period (and those that went unreleased as well) are classics and I can't imagine being without any of them.

Peace, David

If you had asked me this question a few months ago,'SOTT' would have been at the top of my list. But in recent weeks,I've been listening to '1999' again and I've decided that it is my all-time favorite Prince album.

1. 1999 - Changed the sound of popular black music and totally debunked traditional ideas of what it could be. Contrary to popular belief, it was this album and not 'Thriller' that began to tear down the wall MTV had erected for black artists in its programming. A masterpiece double album set with no weak cuts.

2. Sign O' The Times - Last album that had touches of the Revolution influence. Brilliant double album that truly shows Prince's range and virtuosity. Largely slept on by the masses, but universally recognized as a classic by critics and those in the know. This album alone contains probably 3 of his best tunes ever.

3. Dirty Mind - All the critics love you in New York. This was the one that took the talking heads by surprise. This is not music, this is a trip. And what a trip it was! The record that truly started it all. A non-stop party of endless jams that ran from '80 - '87, this album was the precusor. Incest, Multi-cultural funking, fellatio, war protest...you name it, Dirty Mind had it. Most importantly it sported Prince's funkiest song ever - 'Head'.

4. Purple Rain - Not his best music, but among the best and certainly the most popular thing he's ever touched. Side one was near perfection and side two wasn't far off even though 'Purple Rain' the song is one of his most overrated tunes. 'When Doves Cry', though, is easily the best single he ever relased. There was literally nothing else like it on the radio at that time.

5. Parade - Extremely underappreciated record and mired in the shadow of a movie that was only watchable if you were a huge fan of Prince. Production work on this album is never talked about with the sort of respect it deserves. The traditional 'Minneapolis sound' was flipped on it's ear on this album and spawned 'SOTT' just one year later. Earlier, I said 'Purple Rain' contained Prince's best single ever. One paragraph later, I could be wrong.

Clear, concise and to the point. I may rank them differently, but I would agree with each of the summaries.

Violator, you're one terse Taurean!
