Under The Cherry Moon Shot In Color..

Msny speculate Under the Cherry Moon was shot in color?... Yes this is true.. the movie was filmed in color at first.. as you saw in the film Prince shot many beautiful nature scenes.. the ocean mountains.. originally suppose to be in color but a last minute decision Prince decided to convert the film into black and white

No, I thought he wanted it to be B&W from the get go, but WB weren't going for it - a B&W movie in 1986 (!) - so they shot it in colour and converted it to B&W for release - Prince got his way, I guess after PR he was in a position to do anything he wanted, he was a money maker.

The colour version is circulating - dunno if it's on VCD or DVD, but years ago I saw it for trade on old man VHS.

Come on! I thought it was cute!

I mean he was going for the whole 1940's romantic comedy vibe anyways, so it worked.

I think Prince was just a bit too goofy to pull it off properly, but I like the fact it's so naff, it's kind of a cult thing that only fans get, because only we get the humour. smile

UTCM was shot in color for the first few days, but was lit in a way that made it look better in B&W. Prince's original intent was that it was a B&W film so he shot it so that WB would have no choice but to turn it into B&W. Lighting on color and on B&W films is very different. You can't just shoot something in color and expect it to look good by losing the color. Shooting something artfully in Black and white requires a lot of preparation.

The bottom line is there is no color version of it floating around. The closest there is is the color footage from Mountains (which when turned black and white looks like shite-you can see that in the released video)

actually (I work with film and video) you can tell the movie was shot in color and then turned black and white because the contrast is not as rich as proper b&W, and many scenes look as if they were lit for color (lower contrast ratios, muddy details that have would looked good in color)...but they could fix it all up with a new video remaster straight to dvd.

Yes it was all shot in color (at WB's insistance)
Though Prince had always intended it to be a B&W movie
from the start.

I can confirm that the movie was started in Color, but was not completed in color. Prince shot it in a way that made it impossible for Warner Bros. to continue the shoot in color and they had to finish the film in Black And White.

UFOclub is partially right. You can tell that some of the movie was shot in color. I hope this clears it up for those of you who are waiting for a color version of it. It doesn't exist. Trust me.

I for one am glad that the movie is in B&W ... if u pay attention to Tricky's descriptions of their costumes u would probably be grateful for the lack of color in this film too
