Hey, Alex Han's "Possessed" Wasn't Half-Bad After All!

Matta o' fact this is actualy a quite good read. I'm glad that I didn't listen 2 the "hounding" against Alex!

I really enjoyed reading this book despite the bad feeling I'm having each time I read every paper from tha book(Now that is a real sad story, Anji wink).

The man made some valid points and obeviously touched on a very sensitive nerve otherwise he wouldn't get all this controversy(Believe it or not, I heard a couple of NYC/Harlem DJs give their inputs about the book and what not) and reading his words telling a story makes me realize mo' & mo' that Alex is no different than the "Hardcore Oger" with the intresting thoughts and knowledge about the music & biz behind Prince(ala Anji, NuPowerSoul, rdhull, Moonbeam, SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy, Boris and etc etc etc you name 'em). I give him the credit 4 the balls & the guts 2 make that move.

My only one complaint is he didn't talk about the Divorce/Baby's death. If you already dug deep into the personal stuff in the book then you gotta complete what you started otherwise why make that move from the 1st place? Right?

Anyway, thats my lil' 2 cents about the book & Alex. I sho hope some of the "angry hardcore" fans in here read this book coming from another "fan"(which seems to me that he is a hardcore fan) rather than a book coming from another "hater" who wants 2 get even. Just chill and read this without judging the facts and remember that everybody got skeletons in their closet(without exception).

Lawd knows that I love the brotha with a strong passion simply cuz he shed alot of joy in my life but then again we're talking about a "human being" here, we're not talking about Jesus. Hell, Stevie Wonder got dirty secrets too, everybody does.

I just hope u guys enjoy this read like I did.

Much props & love 2 Alex 4 taking a great deal of time talking about Prince in a period of time where the media and the people don't give a shit about him anymore and who even still think that he's a "sympol" and not Prince again.

Peace

Harlepolis,I agree with your assessment of this book.I didn't think it was half-bad,either.It's an interesting read with lots of quotes from insiders and former bandmembers.

I liked it too. I just thought that there could have been some more gossip in there, is all. I mean, we get a few new facts on Prince and Susannah (sending her home from Nice) and Wendy & Lisa, but a lot is left out. For instance, it mentions that there was some kind of problematic relation between Prince and Boni Boyer, but it doesn't say what the problem was. Also, it doesn't say why Sheila E. and Cat left. As rivals for Prince's love, did they leave because Anna Garcia enterede the picture? Or what?
And there is nothing on Princes relationships with Jill Jones, Sheena Easton, Sinead O' Connor, Kim Basinger, Carmen, Nona Gaye and all, even though all of them have slipped juicy tidbits to the press. And what about that there story of Prince telling some girl that sleeping with him was like sleeping with God - especially if they videotaped it? lol

What we really need is a book about Prince's women/personal relationships rather than yet another book about his music and business dealings - we've read all that before, and for those of us who followed the public feud with Warners and the death of Prince and Mayte's baby as it happened and was covered in the news, Possessed did not have that much new information to offer. But it IS a nice compliment to DMSR. In fact, if one has not read DMSR, this book might not stand on its own.

Still nice, but... not really what I was hoping for.

It wasn't that bad. Just had alot of rehashed information from other souces that has already been published.

His writing is very flat and dull and the book took me a long time to finish.

Still had a few insights that I didn't know about.

Yeah, i agree, I think it was better than what people gave it credit for. Out of all of them, I think it was the best as it spanned his whole career.
However, as with all the biogs, the 80's was dealt with in depth but it was much less detailed for recent years which is a shame.
Apart from that, I found it an interesting read

well stated. I read the book with an open mind (ie. i knew
a lot of prince's not so nice side) so i wasn't upset about
the negative things said in the book.

i dig prince but i've always separated his ART from what he
is! yep there's some errors in the book...i wrote alex several notes and told him what they were!!! but i also told
him i enjoyed the book too.

is it as good as DMSr? no. but its still pretty good.

The kind of book you are looking for, probably won't come out until he's uh..gone.
I'd be willing to bet that some of his ex's kept diaries/journals(kind of like Anais Nin's books),and one of them intends to release it,but NOT while he's alive.
Imagine "Private Joy-My Love Affair With Prince by Susan Moonsie" or maybe Kim Basinger will write an autobiography and dedicate a whole chapter to their brief affair,or one day even Sheila might decide to write a memoir style book about her career & stuff that she has witnessed being in P's life all these years, including their relationship...
Or some girl we don't even know about, may come out with a book.
You get the picture.

Just ordered it from B&N. thanks for making me aware of it.

Looks like Per Nilson's "Dancemusicsexromance" is coming in paperback... is it going to be redunandt with "Possessed"?

I have an older book by Per and it's awesome, so I'll probably buy this reissue when it comes out too.

Well, the thang is. He's a good writer(despite the oh so many typos lol) however, he seemed a bit unfair about alot of thangs. Its obevious that he focused on the negative mo' rather than making a balance between the positive & the negative(Like Per did). Expoe his dirty laundry but on the other hand don't shut off the good thangs he did that nobody know about.

And like I said, its not detailed at all. He didn't mention what went wrong between Sheila, Boni & Prince. And the whole divorce thang. He was deeply exlusive about W&L, right? Then if so, Mayte/P's fall out wouldn't be such a problem discussing about it.

Alex woulda been supriced by the errors if he read his OWN book b4 publishing it.

But I gotta give credit where credit is due. Some of the thangs in it brought a laugh to me. like the Miles Davis, Prince, Eric & Atlanta Bliss' pre4mance AND the meeting between John L. Nelson & Miles.

Can you guys tell what at least some of the errors were for someone thinking about buying it?
Thanks,

1.Typos(Lots of typos).
2.Missing infos(Boni & Sheila's depart from his band).
3.And Chaka's meeting with him and her depart from the NPG.
4.Mayte's divorce.

He also doesn't talk alot about the rainbow children other than fans' major opinion about which I think u already know. But I don't want his opinion, I wanted inputs and research about it from the band(clearly Naji, Rhonda Smith, Johny Blackwell didn't patricipate in the book.).

If you have Liz Jones' book "Slave To The Rhythm" then its enough 4 you.

However, I en enjoyed a couple of laughs like the Time Vs P's band back in Controvesy tour(he goes deeper into that thang) and Miles Davis' meeting with John L. Nelson.

Hope this help you smile

There are a myriad of threads around about the mistakes within the book.

One of the funniest ones was that he called Bono U2's guitarist. whofarted

That's weird: I just finished the book and was sort of looking out for that mistake, having read about it on the org. However, I'm pretty sure my copy says The Edge. Revised second edition? Anyway, I liked the book. I didn't find it negative, even though I didn't agree with some of his assessments of the music. Funniest part: where Prince has a deeply spiritual conversation with Tommy Barbarella, then goes into the studio and writes a song called Good Pussy! smile smile smile

To those of you who say this book is overly negative,it's worth noting that Alex doesn't even mention the Sinead O'Connor "Prince-threatened-to-kick-my-ass" tale, nor does he bring up Charlene Friend...lol
