What if Prince....?

What if PRINCE would have released NEWS after PURPLE RAIN?
I know its hard to imagine that because PRINCE wasnt there musically yet and his band could not play that way. But just say for a moment that PRINCE did release NEWS after Purple Rain, obviously no matter what he did after Purple Rain would have been a commercial success just from people curious about his next move or hoping for a Purple Rain 2. Im sure WB would have fought him on that idea but at that point they would still have to release it. So what would have been the result?

It would have bombed HUGE. BTW huge commercial success does not guarantee sucess on your next release. Just ask Macy Gray.

Well that is true but any artist that has had an album sell 10 million plus, their next cd always rides that success even if it sells enough to go gold or platnum which is how the industry defines success, not me though. My point is that PRINCE switching gears totally like he did after PURPLE RAIN is what caused the sales to drop, not that the music wasnt better because his music is better. But the further PRINCE moved from PURPLE RAIN the further sales fell. I mean up until that point with the exception of the 1999 Album, PRINCE was a GOLD selling artist at best. Which is why I tell people his chart days are over, and to deal with it and just listen to what he gives you or dont, but stop all of this talk about "what PRINCE should do to get played on the radio", my opinion is that if PRINCE ever lowers himself to do a TOP 40 Neptunes Produced track I will have to lose my respect for him as an artist. And also he will be looked at as a joke.

He did. Several years later.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
