IMO I see it as an excellent addition to the Purple Rain era. It's almost like a "bonus track."

I just think the imagery and mood evoked in this song are superb.
The lyrics are simple but the words are so carefully chosen as to be poetic in my eyes.

The first time I heard it I wanted to be very silent and listen to the music and words. He was cranking out so much at the time, how could everything be perfect? I listened for holes, but there are no missteps on this song.

And like Doves and Anna Stesia, the music and words echo one another and fit together so cohesively that it's almost hypnotic.

I revere 17 Days for the composition it is.

But in addition to that... I also revere it because I heard it during the Purple Rain era when every thing Prince put together was golden It just continued his unbelievable streak of awesomeness.

When I heard it, i was like, "damn, even the B-sides are awesome!"

And because of every link in that streak Prince will be forever remembered as a master.

rain
two cigarettes
alone in room
heart broken.
I'm lonely I've counted the days since you've been gone
I'm imagining you screwing someone else.
So, I'm just gonna smoke the blues away and I don't give a damn if the rain swallows me.

cool mood

synthia...i agree. the imagery,the lyrics,the groove,the mood...his singing...the bass...everything its close to
home with me. to me 17 days should have replaced "nikki or
take me with u ON the album! i'm not gonna call it a
"groundbreaking song" all i'm saying is its one hell of
a song. and i love singing it!

charles..."why don't you answer the phone baby...'
(prince sounds really DEvastated at the fade! )

Okay I love it and Im excited about the song. Im feelng you on everything you said except that "Darling Nikki" and "Take Me With U" are just 2 irreplaceable to be replaced!! disbelief

haha...just one man's opinion! nikki i like..(i've done the
song with some musical buddies of mine...its a trip to sing!) but to me it works better in the movie scene where
it was used. my association with d-nikki is forever linked
to the "come back nikki scene in the movie!

as for take me with you (apples's terible singing ruins the
tune for me! ) the song itself is nice. (prince should have
erased her voice!)

17 days is a superior song and should be on the album.
but maybe i'll meet ya half-way. keep "nikki" in the album
and blow up "take me with you!" (smile)

No, Apollonia has a strange voice, not a bad voice, and her off putting singing has a naive charm. This song is just about two lovers and their carefree search for the meaning they have in each others eyes.

And the Clair Fischer symphonic riff on that song is so bazzare and brilliant, it gets me every time. As good, if not better than the oppening of Beethoven's Fifth.
