NEWS just clicked. My theory of why some slag it.

I was, until recently, one of those people 'not getting' NEWS. I called it 'Elevator Music' 2.

But now it's just clicked. It's funky as hell in places and always hits a nice groove.

I think the reason a lot of people are not getting it is because it's been released as an 'ALBUM'.

If these were discovered outtakes/bootlegs people would be going crazy over them. I can imagine the beginning part of SOUTH coming straight out of the black album era (although it's a warmer kind of funk) along with 2 Nigs. People woulda gone mad for shit like this back then. It's only since people have started to question his artistic value and originality, plus the fact this has been officially released as an album, do people slag it off.

Its shit and that's why people don't like it. It has no VA VA VOOM and it sounds like something one of your muscian friends puts together and is all excited about. He/She play it to you one evening while you sit there uncomfortably describing it as 'different and unusual' . . .and drinking more beer hoping that some other words will come to you soon other than shite, crap, supermarket music, . . .

BUT because Prince is the muscian - it's all different.

I think it is ridiculous to state that only a musician would get on with this album - and you imply that musicians would put together "shite, crap, supermarket music" and STILL get excited about it!

I am no musician and I am diggin’ East as I type. In fact I don't know why I like it, it just works for me. I think you might need to be a musician to explain why you like it. Open your mind and chill to it, brilliant!

No no no. You read it all wrong!!

I was just putting a scenario together - that was the first thing that popped in my head. A musician who thinks he's King and you're trying to be polite and say err - thanks but no thanks.

And yes - some people would put 2gether shite, crap, supermarket music and STILL get excited about it.

Heck there are some talented muscians out there that never get heard for some reason or another.

i still like MORE 1999 and parade, but news it's no shit...maybe it's what we can expect from a 45yers old musician who achieved all the major goals..he wants to do what he likes.

Above anything else, I'm just not interested in listening to it - I've played it through a few times, but I don't want to listen it - a new Prince album, and I don't want to listen to it! lol

Maybe it will hit me in time, TRC took a good year or so before I loved it.

I think the most offputting part is that the first track is dull as dishwater, and it feels like a chore to listen to the CD the whole way through.

Maybe I need to get stoned and give it a listen, I'm sure it will sound different. weed

While I was never fully in the "anti-NEWS" camp, I wasn't a huge fan of the album either. That is until last night. I was doing some surfin' on the net when I decided to put it on. Up until that point I had only listened to the album in the car and once all the way through while I was doing some house work. Well one listen with the head phones and I was sold. While it's doesn't quench my thrust for a Prince album along the lines of 1999, it is an impressive album on it's own. I disagree with people who say we only like it because it's Prince. If anything I think the fact it has Prince's name on it hurts more than help. It builds and xpectation (pun intended) as to what we are going to or want to hear. I know it did for me. So I'm going to look at NEWS for what it is. A solid instrumental record, that falls someplace between good and great.

As I am writing these lines I am listening to EAST. I think with this album you have to sit down, put some headphones on and take your time. The more I listen to this album the more I love it. I think N.E.W.S is great and the reason why I was and am into Prince's music is because he is not doing the same kind of thing over and over again.
