So what do u all think. If the vocals were really sparse, and Prince only made instrumentals. I know this is a tough question but let's pose that after Purple Rain he only made instrumental albums (madhouse et al)...would u still b a fam??

Too hypothetical. Can't really answer the question since Prince wouldn't be Prince if he had only made instrumental albums ya' know? Without a body of work to judge, who's to say. He'd probably lose some fans, probably gain some fans.

hard question. personally i think of prince's voice as another "instrument" on its own as his lyrics aren't too "deep". i imagine songs without his voice, but y'know the "ooh"'s and screams at the right time - that's just the cream on top of most on his songs.

well, ol' boy dabbled in instrumentals early on in his career and i like those...i wouldn't dig him as much as i do, probably.

I love Prince's instrumental songs as well.. yeah I'd probably be a fan.. even though I LOVE his lyrics,.. yeah I'd still dig him if it was only instrumental..

Of course, it would depend on the output but, given that he has released some of the most astonishing music over the years, I'm sure most of it would have been great!!

I think the real question here though is "Do you like instrumental music?" - well, yes I do! A number of bands that I listen to are either purely or mainly instrumental and even the band I play with has had a 20-year, 20 album career just on instrumental music!

As long as it can take you somewhere and build some sort of sonic picture, then there is nothing wrong with instrumental work - if its vapid and characterless, then its just muzak - yeeuchhh!
