Or the mid part of East. Blissful sounds, and if some folks can't hear it then they need they're ears checked!
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

What I mean is that it's not groundbreaking at all. It's a good piece of music but not pushing any bounderies except that it's a bit of a new format for him.

Kick-ass for me would be something overwhelmingly different and new. This record is musically actually quite conservative but of a good level, and a kind hardly to be put out now by any artist; but it doesn't redifine the current music scene or crushes any sort of taboos or preconceptions in music.

It's just a fine record... I would recommend people to have a listen; but I wouldn't go all euphoric over it.

btw, I like the east part a lot ... it's just that before i would call something a "kick-ass" album, it should "really" kick ass.

For the last decade, prince has lost a huge portion of his audience, hardly ever made a hit,so I don't think you can still talk about him as a "pop(ular)" artist.
He's not risking losing his audience because except for a core set of fans, evryone's long gone.

that's make perfect sense..but a 4 tracks record with 15 minutes long songs it's very peculiar..don't you think so ?

It might be peculiar but doesn't really give any added value to the music, does it?

i agree, but we have to face the fact that a lot of people won't..when so many fans keep talking about "new musical direction" about a couple of records, desunction is there must be something in them we can't grasp...

It might be a different dircection for him personally, but the difference is that his older records were new music, really new sounds, lyrically, conceptually new. His persona and music crushed taboos.

He's not provocative in a progressive way anymore, and his musical development only affects his own history and no longer that of pop-music. No shame there - the guy's old enough to do as he pleases and i can imagine that he finds the whole young rebelious streak a bit off when you're 45. Even if he would bring out crap records now (and occasionally, he does...) He has proven his merrit to popularmusic long ago, exceeding most other 80's artists.

I heard stuff that goes far beyond this and therefore kicks more ass and is a real piece of enovative music. I'm thinking "bitches brew" from M.davis here. All recorded in one take; just putting musicians together jaming and coming up with a masterpiece that shocked the jazz-world and kicked jazz-funk in the balls.
NEWS is not a "dangerous, menacing" body of art to established music. It is, indeed, well executed quality music, but don't make it into more then it is.
