What's Your Problem? Devout Prince fans have been waiting for years for Prince to be Free. Free to do what he wants. Once The Very Best of Prince cd was released by Warner Bros. Prince was free to release music on his schedule. Has he done that? I'd say yes. The Rainbow Children followed within months of The Best of Prince. TRC was followed in 6 or 7 months by One Nite Alone. ONA was followed in 6 or 7 months by One Nite Alone...Live. ONAL was followed in 6 or 7 months by N.E.W.S.
ONA & N.E.W.S. were simple unfussy cds that were recorded & released quickly. ONAL had few overdubs. This is what Prince wanted to do but couldn't with WB tying his hands. Whatever you think of the music lately the big picture is Prince releasing what he wants & releasing a lot. Prince fans should be very happy these days. So What's The Problem?

i see absolutely nothing wrong with people critiquing an artist. a good artist does not worry about critiques because he/she knows they are in top form. i don't think prince is in top form. i still support the work in hopes that he will one day return to top form (and i don't mean 80's...i loved trc). just because prince is releasing tons of stuff doesn't make it tons of good stuff! maybe warners was controlling but compare the quality of warners releases to the quality of npg releases...

It's just that people fell in love with an energetic, dancing, performing super-muscician-songwriter with a young and rebelious character that redefined pop-funk-rock music when he was peaking. A young talented man at full force.
People can't have enough of that but he's no 27 anymore, not fighting his way to the top. He's 45 (?) and still a great musician and performer. But you don't think and act the same way as in your 20's. Generations of young people have reset the bounderies in pâst years and I for one am glad that he's not a complete wash-out like MJ. He's lost me on the whole jehova spiritual blah blah but even without being cutting edge, he can make a descent record, and kick ass as a live-performer. Not many popstars can do that without going flat on their face. Even madonna is getting to be a caricature of herself, wearing clothes and styles that were fashionable when she started out in the early 80's. I only hope that the superreligious era flies over so that he would release old live-footage incl all profanity, so that people who were to young to go and see him live in that era, can still have a taste of what made people go nuts over him back then. he should stop being ashamed of what he made back then and accept, like all adults, that the "mistakes, regrets" are just as part of who you are as the "hits". The problem is that when Prince got 'free', the music that he spoke about releasing, he didn't release. I truly hope Emancipation wasn't what he was talking about all that time.ONA & N.E.W.S. were simple unfussy cds that were recorded & released quickly. ONAL had few overdubs. Another point I meant to make was there looks like a release pattern of something new every 6 or 7 months.
Which hopefully means something new come late winter/early spring.

I agree. I'd rather he released more rather than less.
I'm glad he's now able to release N.E.W.S. as a proper Prince album rather than having to shunt it off as a Madhouse release or something. Yes, it's not his best album, but it's interesting music anyway.

Prince's last truely GREAT lp was Lovesexy
What more is there to say?! There have been excellent moments since, but not an album to eclipse that or any of the other lp's he did in the 80s I'm not an insularretrospective freak either, I just don't think he has done himself any justice for about 15 years!!!

p.s. as for his post-Warner material - it's total shit in 'comparisson,' and you all know that too!

You're almost right. I still rate The Truth very highly and Emancipation had it's fair share of good tracks. Beyond that, just the occasional gem.

Please, don't get me wrong - I'm not writing of his entire post-Warner catalogue - note I said 'in comparisson' I love Emancipation, The Truth, even parts of TRC... and the Symbol lp is fantastic actually - but in the scheme of things, I think we're kidding ourselves if we start to say he's as good now as he was back then, that's all

I've personally been very happy with the path Prince has recently chosen. His last few CDs have been his most creative in years...especially TRC. I also am happy to death to have ONAL and NEWS is great. I think people are wanting him to continue to be a "pop" or "funk" artist, but he's trying to do something different and on his terms. I honestly couldn't care less if he has another hit or not. I just hope he continues along the creative path he's been on the past few years. I really don't want him to do another Rave or NPS (even tho those weren't bad they just seemed like he was bored and spinning his wheels). It's been exciting to see him grow as an artist while leaving the pop world behind (and what a pathetic world it is at the moment).
Now its the time for me to bitch...The only thing I think sucks is the NPGMC (even tho I have been a member since day 1...a bit hypocritical I know). I am not crazy about the idea of having to shell out $$ to join a club, in order to get a CD from may favorite artist, only to find out later its being released in the stores too. I wish he would just use the website to PROMOTE the CD and then release it in stores. What the fuck is the point of the club? I don't get it. Hey Prince if you need some help in the marketing department give me a ring...it looks like you need some help there. Finally, the JW thing doesn't bother me...although I don't get it, if he's found some happiness there then good for him.
